Kahuku’s dynamic D finishes a win short

Kahuku went 24-2 overall in the past two seasons, thanks in large part to a suffocating defense led by its secondary.

Starting cornerbacks Kekaula Kaniho and Stokes Nihipali-Bothelho, both seniors, ended their high school careers with a 30-14 loss to Saint Louis in the HHSAA Open division championship game.

Though it’s not the way either wanted to end their prep careers, both took it in stride.

“They earned that win. Any team can win on any given night and they won tonight,” Kaniho said. “They were really good. We just didn’t come out and execute.”

Both lifted the Red Raiders with their big-play ability on defense and special teams over the past two seasons.

Each also made their own bid for state defensive player of the year.

Nihipali-Bothelo picked off Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa twice in last year’s state title game, a 39-14 victory for Kahuku. He carried that momentum over to this season, where he scored on defense and special teams eight times. Additionally, he emerged as a steady and reliable kicker, handling placekicking and kickoff duties for the Red Raiders.

“It was a good season,” Nihipali-Bothelho said. “Having only two losses in two years is unbelievable.”

Kaniho’s stellar season was highlighted by a hot streak in the postseason in which he recorded a pick-6 in four consecutive weeks against Leilehua, Waianae, Farrington and Kapolei, respectively.

He played his first two seasons of high school ball at Kamehameha and holds scholarship offers from Army, Boise State, Colorado, Hawaii, UNLV, San Diego State, Vanderbilt and Washington State.

“It’s been a great ride with the guys,” Kaniho said. “All the memories we made here will carry on forever and friends for life, you know? That’s the thing to take away from this.”

Nihipali-Bothelho currently holds no offers but has a plan in place.

“Just gotta keep working and get ready for the next level and do what I do,” he said. “Somewhere on the West Coast. I have to get off this island. I love home, it will always be with me, but yeah.”

Both Kahuku’s defense and offense threw their playbooks away and tried something new. That one just baffled EVERYONE. You have to put it 100% on the coaches for this loss.

Nice to be able to read blogs where North Shore fans are no longer bashing what they called St. Lulu along with other ILH schools. Unfortunate for the Kahuku kids as they are innocent and played their hearts out, but as for the ones trying to live their dreams through the kids…. let this be a good lesson to learn from. Never underestimate your opponent… and more so… never talk trash about them. If you feel an urge to speak trash, for whatever reason you may have… please wait until you solidified your victory; otherwise, ….shame ah brah? Bottom line… everyone be humble… can’t we just play nicely in the same sandbox?

    OIA #1,
I think the Saints have more… I know they have like 13 straight in a row of being statechamp/prep bowl… What? you going say no can count prep bowl? LOL… it doesn’t matter what they call it or will call it in the future. All the same intent.

  11. Education First November 21, 2016 8:26 am

Kahuku is the top dog over the past 10 years. They have a solid program. It’s too bad that a fool like 88 tries hard to rep them. I’ts hard to call them dynamic in my opinion when they are facing inferior and not very good offenses in the OIA. Radford? Leilehua? Waianae? Kaiser? Aiea? Moanalua? These are not very good offenses and are over-matched against Kahuku. This year, Kahuku has played two above-average to great offenses.

Against BG they held them to 35, but they needed to milk the clock and use severe ball control to keep the score down. You would think when you are chasing 21-28 points and you want to win you would go no huddle, pass the ball, or snap the ball quicker to get more snaps. But no, they were content to let the play clock wind down to keep the score close (it seems).

They lost 30-14 against St. Louis. If the St. Louis receiver doesn’t drop a wide open TD pass on broken coverage which resulted in a FG that would be a difference of +4. Then on first and goal, Cal could and should have went empty backfield and let Tua run it. If they score that is another +4.

The final score could have been 38-14. Either way, Kahuku’s defense didn’t look too good on Friday. I am not saying they aren’t a top team, they obviously are. It’s just that their defense isn’t as good as advertised. It’s hard when you play inferior teams. When will you get tested? It’s not their fault, but the OIA (other than maybe Kapolei), doesn’t really test their secondary.

  12. Oia#1 November 21, 2016 8:29 am

Personally I dont count it. State sounds better! But If this year was any indication of things to come being that stlouis won the first state championship and first open championship then money has to be with kahuku.

    1) In the Punahou vs. Kapolei game, both teams played hard.

    @Education First
Let’s not play the “what if’s” game because that can be played both ways. What if Kahuku doesn’t fumble at the one yard line. Kahuku would be up 5. What happens if on the punt return they don’t call a dead ball that Kahuku returned for a TD? Kahuku up even more. What happens if Tua’s fumble actually counted. What if, what if, what if.

Never mind the what if’s……. St. Louis won…. Congrats. Tua was as advertised. At the same time let’s not act like St. Louis completely out played Kahuku. You are acting as if Kahuku got steam rolled. The game COMPLETELY changed on the 1st and goal fumble in the middle of the fourth. Kahuku could not recover from that.

People still complaining about our schedule….. We STEAM ROLLED Kapolei…..Punahou couldn’t even beat them. Our number 3 (who again we demolished) convincingly beat your #2. So your strength of schedule argument is ridiculous. The equivalent to everyone complaining about Lebron James being in the East having an easy schedule. Why does that matter if he wins the championship and beats the Best from the West anyway?

BTW, 88 I noticed that you still haven’t responded to my post the other week. I have posted it numerous times but you have chosen to ignore it. Why is that? For a guy who posts so often I would figure you would have some interesting or very “comical” reply.

Do you still think “silly” & “comical” have the same definition? About 2 weeks ago you puffed your chest and said they had the same meaning. Then I showed the world (like I always do) that both words have entirely different meanings and once again you use vocabulary words out of context.

Can you elaborate why you have:
    1) not replied to that comment I made after posting it in numerous stands many times
    2) you don’t know the difference between two low level vocabulary words.

I am still waiting after 12 days for your wonderful response.

****DISCLAIMER – 88 will not reply if he:
    1) does not understand
    2) is stumped
    3) is crying since he is not a part of Kahuku Football

  18. Education First November 21, 2016 12:18 pm

Now if you read the post, the article says, “Dynamic D.” I am talking about points scored which ties into the article talking about Kahuku’s Dynamic D. I am not talking about St. Louis’ defense. Kahuku fumbling has nothing to do with this post. If Kahuku won and scored 100 points that still doesn’t talk about their defense.

My point is, St. Louis could have scored more points on them. It took some great fortunate in my opinion that St. Louis dropped a wide open pass in the endzone. It also took some curious play calling when it was first and 1.

That supports my claim that Kahuku, while having a very fine defense, isn’t as good as some people thought or some sports writer’s believed. Allowing 30 and potentially much more is not the signs of a great defense.

Kahuku could have scored more. They had some unfortunate plays. But even if they returned the fumble like you say and do not fumble, that just means Kahuku’s offense would score more. It has nothing to do with St. Louis moving the ball on Kahuku’s Dynamic D (unless they lose one possession due to a fumble).

My point is while Kahuku’s defense is one of the better defenses, it definitely helps to play teams with marginal offenses. Do you disagree with that fixyoface ?

  19. 88 November 21, 2016 12:20 pm

See this is what happens when your monthly data plan runs out. If it hadn’t you would of read my response. Now go back like a good little clown and read my response from 2 weeks ago before your data for the month runs out again.

  20. Manley November 21, 2016 1:06 pm

The defense could not adjust to Tua. I still believe they have the best D. Ah Hoy going 3 quarters plus, then ask to carry the ball was a mistake. Just my opinion. Brown and Vakapuna was doing fine running the ball. My pick for DPOY is Kaniho. Tua got O POY.

  21. Crusadernation November 21, 2016 1:10 pm

Can’t we all just remember that they are kids playing a game and games should be fun? The analyzing just kills me….The game was played, Saint Louis won. Just like last year, the game was played, Kahuku won. Can’t we just say good game, congratulate the victors, console the defeated, wish the departing Seniors good luck, relish a little bit in the moment (if applicable) and move on? The bigger picture of these athletes using athletics as a vehicle to other opportunities is being missed. I know plenty champions NOT doing anything with their lives because they only focused on their sport and not the bigger picture of life. Just my opinion. Take it as you wish!

Unlike you 88, money isn’t really an issue for me. I am on an unlimited plan. I never upgraded to the Mobi phone your mommy got you. Man, at least pay for your own bills and stop relying on mommy and stop sucking that nipple man.

C’Mon man, stop lying again. It”s okay that you don’t know what simple words like silly and comical mean.

You can try to camouflage your stupidity by making up lies, yelling, getting angry, or whatever feeble (do you know this word without using the dictionary?) attempt you need to do.

FACT #1 – You do not know the difference in definitions between the words silly and comical! HAHAH! The entire world saw it! HAHA.

Now I understand if it was a typo or you accidentally misspelled a word. Dude, you don’t even know that the word silly and comical are totally different.

And, you even went on record so say something like, “Aren’t silly and comical have the same meaning so you are a sausage loving clown?”

Man, that is not a TYPO or MISSPELLED word. You think they are the same. And you want to call people names?

And for the record, I fricken love sausage. Andouille, Chorizo, Portuguese, Linguica, etc. They are all good.

But since you are not creative I am guessing when you refer to sausage, you are trying to be both silly and comical (see I know how to use the words properly unlike you) and refer to a specific part of the male anatomy.

Like I said, you can puff you little chest, you can talk crap, but the entire world (and you do too but are too insecure to admit it) knows that you are NOWHERE near my level when it comes to being articulate, scholarly, or just plain smart!

No go home and finish your business under the covers with the photos you take of the Kahuku Football team you damn creeper!

@crusadernation, you bring up some fine points and I totally agree with you. But we have a bigger issue. 88 is contaminating the entire blog with his stupidity and subjectivity.

I hope and pray that there are no children and teenagers on this site. I don’t want them to become dumber by seeing or attempting to read what 88 writes.

88 is a Special Ed Student who didn’t graduate from Nanakuli High School. Bro doesn’t even have his GED. He is too ashamed to take night classes.

So he writes on here and we (the entire Prep World Community) must comment back to help with his atrocious writing. I don’t think it’s helping though. He is still an idiot.

Instead of using high level vocabulary and providing evidence to strengthen his posts, (cite sources, show data, etc.) the dude thinks being angry, calling people names (such as clown or sausage lover), or here is the best one…..using words he DOESN’T UNDERSTAND out of context make him seem intelligent. And he uses the same boring material over and over again.

Please someone help our 88, I think it’s too late! The public school system has failed out little 88!

  26. Just saying... November 21, 2016 2:17 pm

Enough already! Just hope some of these boyz stay home and play for UH now. Crusaders are HI State Football Champs for ’16 and definitely earned it on the field vs. a solid nationally ranked Kahuku team so it’s time to let it go everyone. I believe SLS will be hanging #18 Championship banner in their gym since 1973 for those of you that only want to recognize the new state football championship era and not the prep bowls.

  27. fixyoface November 21, 2016 2:46 pm

    @Education First

If were talking specifically about Kahuku Defense, I agree and disagree. We aren’t as good as last year, but we still had the best defense this year by far. The difference was pressure. This year pressure wasn’t great. Yes some of our numbers will look better because of the weak schedule. But to me does it really matter? No. Why?

We just played probably the second most potent offense in Kapolei and what happened? Again it wasn’t even a contest 56-7. Was this the best defense ever? No, best defense this year? Yes. Still dynamic. Talking about our secondary hasn’t faced anyone good, this is nearly the same defensive secondary that made Tua look mortal last year. Stokes (who had a bad night) picked Tua off twice last year.

You say 30 but that’s misleading. The goaline fumble sucked the life out of the team on both sides of the ball. All the momentum shifted and it snow balled from there. They couldn’t recover. I firmly believe that if we scored it would be a completely different story. But we didn’t we lost, Congrats to St. Louis.

Again best defense this year BY FAR. Not best defense ever.

Wow that’s a lot. I didn’t know they had that many. I think the Prep Bowl is harder to win since it’s one game head to head between ILH and OIA’s best. In the State Tournament Format it was something like OIA 3, ILH 1, MIL 1, BIIF 1. That gives the OIA league the best mathematical chance to win.

I know some people mention some 19 year old players. My old buddy Joe Dano was the STL VP during their heyday. He told me the amount of 19 year olds on the team was a couple per year at most. Please take that for what it’s worth.

I am still impressed with that many titles by Cal Lee. And let’s not forget other coaches with long streaks. Eric Kadaoka, former Punahou Baseball Coach. Chris Black, current Kamehameha Girls Volleyball Coach. Ken Smith, current Punahou Water Polo Coach. It’s super hard to repeat. These guys have won a ton in a row it’s almost too hard to keep track of.

I absolutely agree with you on the Prep Bowl being a lot more difficult. It was a straight up head to head competition, the best of the best, whereas now ILH has two divisions while OIA has several.
As far as the 19 year olds go, my son was 19 when he graduated from SL only because of this regulation on birthday cutoffs in the Christian/parochial school systems.

“No you’re not. Stop lying to yourself. By and large, nobody really cares about Kahuku outside of these message boards.”

Actually people do care especially during football season. Not just these boards, on every social media plat form. Clearly people care if they feel the need to do those things that I already posted (this is in real life not on a message board). This happens on the regular during football season. The burning of apparel is new and went over board IMO.

    @theHeartlessprick
“Like I mentioned to some other Kahuku supporter. The “Kuck Fahuku” shirt was never made. All the hype you guys worked up on social media was self inflicted wounds leading up to defeat. Get over it, you guys only bring attention to yourselves flaunting around & pushing your weight about your Kahuku RR. What else you guys expect when you push the term “Enemy Of The State”? You guys are asking only for everything to come your way by thinking & saying it. Kahuku isn’t “hated” but they sure are the big tree that everyone wants to see fall. And just so happened Big Tree Fall Hard.”

Ok…..so what about all the other incidences that really did happen, and others I haven’t even mentioned? You think it’s ok to burn another schools apparel? Rip off flags from peoples cars? Mock and make negative comments to a family walking with children who wear Red Raider cloths? All because we cheer really loud and our crowds our big? Is going all out in supporting our kids really that bad? Now trolls will say stop being a cry baby…. No being a cry baby is complaining about losing because of the referee’s (yes there are Kahuku supporters being cry babies about the refs), but all those things that I mentioned and more that are happening outside of the game is uncalled for and people need more respect and class then that.

If you knew where “Enemy of The State” actually came from, it had nothing to do with all the other schools and community’s. It was towards the OIA higher ups in 2010 where we had to forfeit because we had a 5th year senior, who never played football before, was third string player, play in every game because we were routing every team we played. We tried to fight the ruling, took it to court and lost. That is where “Enemy of The State” started.

Also what hype did we work up on social media? Trying to coordinate cheers and a haka? We do that for our kids…. not to look cool. In fact nobody was suppose to see it at all and it was suppose to stay in house, but it got leaked. Outside of that I don’t know what other social media hype are talking about.

@fixyoface. . . This is my opinion on your whole argument. I sure as hell hope it wasn’t private school alumni and current students, they should know better. But here’s my take on the incidences you brought up, you have to remember alot of these St. Louis players are the first in their families to attend a private school. These kids families are public school products and when one actually is given the chance to attend private school (st.louis in this case) and the football team has a chance to dethrone Kahuku then the support and bandwagon grows. Those actions you talk about i would expect at an oia game, but you never see somthing like that going down at an ilh game. Here’s a example of bandwagon support. . . The Kapolei games I’ve attended I rarely saw a Taulia Tagovailoa shirt, but you go to a St. Louis game and boom, Tuaman everywhere. When your own public school can’t beat Kahuku but your neighbors cousins uncles son plays for St louis well guess what. . . Kuck Fahuku it is. . . The Bandwagon motto “If you cant beat’m, join’m… some of the boys from the hood and the country are receiving a great education at St louis and being coached by a legend, but their families and friends or bandwagon support are a different story. That’s just my take.

@ Alpha, bandwagons exist everywhere. I recall watching a JV game and eventually Varsity games where my buddies Mark Atuaia, Itula Mili, and Toele Faamoe played in. This was in 1990 or 89 if I recall. Kahuku was not too good back then compared to what they are now. Doug Semones just started is coaching at Kahuku. We went to a game out at Kahuku HS. The stand were empty. In my estimation there were less than 200 fans. So every school has bandwagon riders. People like success.

Every school has supportive and not supportive fans. I do recall my friend Reggie Torres telling me about parents waiting for him by his car during his first year “threatening” him since he was trying to raise the academic standards for the football players.

I don’t know about you, but threatening to do bodily harm is much worse than burning apparel, making inappropriate shirts, or jumping on a bandwagon. Parents swarmed him and he had to be escorted to leave.

I am pretty confident you know this is a fact. Like I said, there are good and bad supporters everywhere. Kahuku is no different.

Some of the incidents were from Alumni or at least supporters of St. Louis. I believe the burnt Kahuku Gear was from a St. Louis Alumni who lives in Vegas (I could be wrong but according to some from our community they know who he is). A man in his 50’s wearing a St. Louis shirt decided to mock a family with their children wearing Kahuku gear.

Now again I ain’t stupid, it isn’t all of St. Louis fan base and community, that act like this. Never the less it is still uncalled for.

Again I understand people wanting to see the GIANT go down trust me. That was St. Louis to us in the 90’s. Again in the spirit of the game and competition it’s all good. We can take jokes as much as give them. Hell I thought it was hilarious when we played Farrington and a fan had the sign “Chop Deez Nuts” lol. It’s outside of the game and all that B.S is what’s irritating.

    Appreciate the honest opinion

@EducationFirst agreed bandwagon support everywhere, but my comment was more towards the possible perpetrators of the incidences @fixyoface brought up. As for the Reggie Torres incident you brought up.
“Every school has supportive and not supportive fans. I do recall my friend Reggie Torres telling me about parents waiting for him by his car during his first year “threatening” him since he was trying to raise the academic standards for the football players.

I didn’t know all that backlash happened with Reggie till reading your post. But that’s small town U.S.A for you where football reigns supreme….

If you’re looking for validation or someone to feel sorry about your Kahuku fan group I think I can speak for majority of the people on here reading your comment. NOBODY CARES. You RR Fans draw attention to yourselves pushing your weight around, you should expect those things to happen. When St Louis had their run of championships I can recall the fans, players & students not being as arrogant publicly as RR in this day & age. But really, who has control of what happens outside of the game? It ain’t HPW that has control or can help the situation.
“Enemy Of The State” was labeled because Kahuku was forced to forfeit in 2010 for having a 5th year senior on the team. Is that really the excuse for being the “Enemy Of The State”? Because you broke the rules & was forced to forfeit because of a ineligible player. You blame the “higher ups” because your team broke the rules? I don’t get this whole situation of labeling yourselves as being “Enemy Of The State” for your own stupidity. It doesn’t matter if he played or not, rules are rules you break them you suffer.
All your hype that you claim that all your RR Fans don’t do is all on HPW. Live videos on Facebook of people talking shit about how Kahuku is going to walk through states. Your “in house practice” being on FB live saying the RR Nation is here to take over. All these small gestures of ignorance is what hypes Kahuku to be on everyone’s shit list. Maybe that’s why you have all these public incidents. You guys bring it upon yourselves.

I am aware of it it is/was a shame. He was ousted unfairly. What makes this community great is also what can make it ugly at the same time. Some people are too passionate and can be too much. I ain’t afraid to admit that, and those parents should be ashamed of themselves. When we have a losing season class can sadly go out the window and call for the coaches head. I love coach Torres.

With that said that doesn’t diminish or lighten what St. Louis Alum did. You’re making it sound as if it’s fine to do something wrong as long as it’s not worse than what another person did. Accepting that as the norm (There are good/bad supporters) doesn’t make it ok for people to do those things.
