Hilo and Ka’u earn crowns on Big Isle

Kahale Huddleston scored two touchdowns to lead host Hilo to a 38-18 victory over Kealakehe in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I football championship game Saturday night.

The Vikings (8-1) are BIIF D-I champs for a fifth year in a row and will be preparing for the upcoming D-I (middle tier) state tournament.

Ka’u (5-2) closed out its regular season in the de facto BIIF 8-man football title game with a 38-24 home victory over Pahoa on Saturday. The Trojans are league champs for the second year in a row and third time in the last four seasons.


Also on Saturday, Lahainaluna (9-1) wrapped up an undefeated Maui Interscholastic League championship season with a 49-7 home victory over Kamehameha-Maui in the regular-season finale. The Lunas, who will be appearing in the D-II state tournament, ended 8-0 in the MIL.

In Friday games, Maui High clinched its second berth in the 18 years of the state tournament by beating Baldwin 26-13 for the MIL D-I title, and Konawaena earned a berth in the D-II state tourney with a 17-9 BIIF D-II title-game win over Kamehameha-Hawaii.
