GAME NIGHT 9/21: Damien/Moanalua

10:18: Game over.

10:16: A Holtz pass is intercepted by Palaylay. 2:22 left in game.

10:15: Na Menehune get a few first downs, but the drive stalls and they punt.

10:10: The Monarchs just get a punt off after a low snap. Moanalua ball on its 48.

10:01: Griffin Motas kicks a 38-yard field goal. MOANALUA 31, DAMIEN 13, 7:10 left in game.

9:59: Moanalua driving. Na Menehune face a fourth down and 14 from the 21.

9:52: Damien goes three and out and punts.


9:47: Third quarter ends.

9:34: It takes Moanalua two plays to score from the Damien 48. Au hits Javon Monico with a 39-yard TD pass. Palaylay kicks the extra point. MOANALUA 28, DAMIEN 13, 2:37 left in third quarter.

9:40: Aukai Grace intercepts a Holtz pass, but takes a penalty for celebration. Moanalua ball at its 6.

9:29: Au is sacked for 23 yards and then the team loses another 19 on a fourth down play (bad snap on a punt). But Damien’s Holtz is sacked once for 14 yards and strip-sacked for 13 yards. Moanalua’s Tre Barrett recovers his fumble.

9:21: Damien fortunately keeps a drive going on its first possession of the second half on a Moanalua roughing the kicker penalty. A 16-yard Logan Lauti run leads to Lauti’s 25-yard TD run. A low snap leads to a failed conversion try. MOANALUA 21, DAMIEN 13, 8:28 left in third quarter.


8:57: Monarchs get as far as their 46 before halftime.

8:53: Au’s long pass is intercepted by Damien’s Ezra Kaina at the Monarchs’ 7.

8:49: Damien goes three and out again. Will punt.

8:44: Au hits Drayden Von Oelhoffen with a 16-yard touchdown pass. Palaylay kicks the extra point. MOANALUA 21, DAMIEN 7, 1:27 left in first half.

8:42: After the punt, Moanalua takes over on the Damien 49. Three plays later, Au finds Kealohi on a slant pattern for 16 yards to the Monarchs’ 16. Damien calls timeout. 1:50 left in first half.

8:38: Na Menehune holds Damien to a three and out. Monarchs will punt.

8:35: Moanalua can’t move and is in punt formation.

8:33: Monarchs get a first down and then punt.

8:25: Two plays later, Au throws a 4-yard TD pass to Ezra Grace. Palaylay kicks the extra point. MOANALUA 14, DAMIEN 7, 8:25 left in first half.

8:24: Moanalua’s Christian Sison intercepts a Jake Holtz (now in at QB for Hoohuli) pass and runs it back 27 yards to the Monarchs’ 22.

8:20: Na Menehune drive but give up the ball on downs at the Damien 32.


8:15: First quarter ends.

8:14: Damien gets two first downs on a the running of Sulu Aperamo (three straight) carries for 20 yards and a 5-yard Moanalua (12 men on the field) penalty. Monarchs ball at their 47.

8:07: Keanu Kekawa intercepts a Hoohuli pass and runs it back 40 yads for a Moanalua TD. Luke Palaylay kicks the extra poit. DAMIEN 7, MOANALUA 7, 2:21 left in first quarter.

8:04: On the next play, Moanalua CJ Paleafei makes a catch, but coughs up the ball when he is hit by Damien’s Ezra Kaina. Monarchs teammate Kevin Edwards.

8:03: Moanalua gets the first down. Then Jacob Copeland runs 18 yards to the Damien 9.

7:59: Three Au throws to Rudy Kealohi help Na Menehune get to the Monarchs’ 34. They face a fourth down and 6.

7:46: Two 15-yard penalties on Moanalua help push the ball up. A 32-yard pass from Duke Hoohuli to Logan Lauti and a 25-yard pass from Hoohuli to Quinn Fukawa set up River Iaea’s 1-yard TD run. Christian Souza kicks the extra point. DAMIEN 7, MOANALUA 0, 6:56 to go first quarter.

7:43: Nick Au at QB for Na Menehune. Moanalua punts on first possession.

7:38: Moanalua will receive. Damien will defend the south end zone.

7:29: Moanalua won the JV game over McKinley 53-0.

7:28: Kickoff is about 10 minutes away.

SERIES HISTORY: Damien leads 2-1
NOTES: The Monarchs shut out Na Menehune 21-0 in the first meeting in 1989 but have been outscored 73-31 in the next two games combined. Two years ago, Ryan Ramones finished 268 receiving yards and Alakai Yuen tossed for 364 yards in the win. This is the first meeting that won’t take place in the month of August.
