The Rough Riders take no chances and put Ogata back in the game. They pick up a first down and eventually, Ogata takes a knee to end the game. This win doesn’t count on Roosevelt’s league standings, but it’s an interesting win because of the 19 penalties for 170 yards. Something they can work on at practice in the coming week.

A Pac-Five player was injured (leg cramp) on the previous play, and two plays later, another Wolfpack player is down after a 27-yard run by RB Kalei Wahilani with 2:07 left. At this point, I think Pac-Five coach Kip Botelho just wants this to get over without any more injuries. Roosevelt’s backup RB, Wahilani, loses the ball on the handoff, it goes airborne, and Dane Ishibashi snags it out of mid-air. He sprints 45 yards to paydirt for Pac-Five’s first TD of the game. The PAT pass by Hedani is incomplete. ROOSEVELT 21, PAC-FIVE 6, Q4, 1:52.

Hedani returns to the game and seems OK. Two more sacks by Roosevelt, and that’s seven for the game. Punt bounces near midfield and Monteilh snags it trying to make a play, but he’s brought down for a three-yard loss. Roosevelt with its 19th penalty, a blindside block. Might as well go for 20?

Roosevelt sends reserve QB Kolea Pa-Macalino into the game and they mostly run the ball. Punt and fair catch gives Pac-Five the ball at its 35 with 6:13 to play.

Roosevelt defense is bringing the heat back. Hedani goes down for a short loss, but on third and long, he’s hit by Kaeo Akana on a one-yard gain and is injured. He gets up within a minute, but that was a scary moment for the Wolfpack. Punt is fairly short, but the return is a minus-12 for Aalona Monteilh. Roosevelt ball at its 24 with 8:13 remaining.

The third quarter ends with Roosevelt at the Pac-Five 28-yard line. Back-to-back holding calls on the Rough Riders make it 17 penalties for 150 yards already. Fourth and 10, Segawa’s 45-yard field goal try has the distance, but is wide. Touchback, Pac-Five ball at its 20 with 11:43 to go in the fourth.

Roosevelt’s Ogata is scrambling again, sacked, but a personal foul after the whistle is called on Pac-Five. Then Ogata slices up the hashmarks for a 17-yard pass. After a short completion, there is an injury time out with a Pac-Five cornerback down near the Wolfpack sideline with 1:49 left in the third quarter.

Pac-Five ball, and there’s a defensive holding penalty on Roosevelt. That’s 13 yellow flags already for Roosevelt (106 penalty yards). Yikes. After completing just one pass in the first half, Hedani has completions to RB/LB Arceyana, the two-way ironman, and WR Angelo Coluccio. But first down at the Roosevelt 49 goes bust when a backup RB goes the wrong way. Looks like he was expecting a pitch and Hedani runs back and hands the ball to him. Maybe it was supposed to be a draw? It’s a four-yard loss, and after two incompletions, Pac-Five punts again. That’s their sixth punt of the game. Rooseelt ball at its 27, 3:33 left third quarter.

Roosevelt drives to the Pac-Five 1, but the ‘Pack makes a stand and sends Roosevelt backwards to the 37. Roosevelt with three penalties already in the second half. Huge sack by Ian Ishibashi on Ogata is a loss of 19 yards. Impressive stand by Pac-Five as Roosevelt punts, ball downed at the 5.

At the half, Roosevelt has 48 rushing yards on 14 carries, including the 13-yard loss on the bad snap. Ogata is 8-for-9, 105 yards and one interception. Pac-Five has six rushing yards on 21 carries, and that includes four Roosevelt sacks. Hedani is 1-for-9, six yards, but to his credit, hasn’t turned the ball over despite the hellacious pass rush.

Pac-Five used time outs during Roosevelt’s previous possession to stop the clock, but here, they’re content to run the ball and the half comes to a close.
The Rough Riders self-destruct with consecutive holding penalties. One fan is hollering for them to run the ball. They’re backed up to their 3-yard line. First and 31. Pac-Five brings the heat as Ogata jitter-bugs in the pocket. After a completion and a scramble, Ogata is sacked for a two-yard loss at the Roosevelt 24. Punt is downed at the Pac-Five 30 with 41 seconds left.

The Wolfpack offense with another three-and-out, and the punt caroms off a Roosevelt player, recovered by Pac-Five’s Jacky Johnson at the Roosevelt 48. However, it’s another three-and-out as Roosevelt’s Kaeo Akana records his second sack. Pac-Five’s punt is fair caught by Roosevelt at its 23 with 2:34 left in the first half.

Another three-and-out by Pac-Five, punt is returned 46 yards but called back by illegal block. Next play, Okata’s deep sideline pass is picked off by Rodrigues, who is out of bounds at the Pac-Five 32.

Sacks by Roosevelt’s Kyson Aponte-Stone and Kaeo Akana derail Pac-Five’s next series. Roosevelt ball at the Pac-Five 44 after the punt goes out of bounds. Ogata connects on two completions for 21 yards before Kukahiwa tears off a 20-yard run between the tackles, and finishes it off with a 3-yard TD run, his third score of the game. ROOSEVELT 21, PAC-FIVE 0, Q2, 7:53.

The Rough Riders drive 72 yards in just four plays. A 53-yard catch and run by Chase Akana, plus a sideline interference penalty, sets them up at the Pac-Five 10. Kukahiwa scores his second TD, a 10-yard run, up the gut and dragging tacklers over the goal line. ROOSEVELT 14, PAC-FIVE 0, Q2, 11:02.

Two plays after the fumble recover, Pac-Five get a 33-yard TD as Hedani scrambles right and finds Ezekiel Rodrigues wide open across the field on the left sideline, but the ‘Pack is whistled for ineligible man downfield. Huge break for Roosevelt. Pac-Five’s drive stalls and ends at the Roosevelt 28 with 1 second left in the first quarter.

Roosevelt has fourth-and-1 at the Pac-Five 49, bad snap and there’s a mad scramble. Pac-Five’s Dane Ishibashi recovers and advances the ball three yards to the Roosevelt 33. Huge break for Pac-Five.

Wolfpack get their first first down of the game, a 16-yard scramble by QB Chase Hedani, who takes a late hit out of bounds. Personal foul tacked on. ‘Pack operating mostly out of the slot-I set, handing the ball to RB Micah Kong twice and he picks up a first down. They’re in Roosevelt territory for the first time, milking the play clock each time. But they come up short on fourth and short with quick an end-around. Roosevelt ball at its 42.

Pac-Five goes three and out on its first series and punts out of bounds. Roosevelt ball at its 42, and the Rough Riders drive to the 34 on chunk yardage gains, but Ogata takes a 10-yard sack. After a completion, illegal procedure on Roosevelt. After Ogata is chased out of bounds for a sack/two-yard loss, they punt. Pac-Five returns it five yards to its 11-yard line, 7:25 left, first quarter.

Fumble on the opening kickoff by Pac-Five, recovered by Roosevelt sophomore Kyson Aponte-Stone at the Wolfpack 25-yard line. QB Sky Ogata to Chase Akana to the 1-yard line on a sideline pass, then RB Myka Kukahiwa scores on a 1-yard run. ROOSEVELT 7, PAC-FIVE 0, Q1, 11:22.
