GAME NIGHT 9/13: Damien/Leilehua

Holding on first down pushes Damien back to its 30. Incomplete on first and second down. Holtz escapes pressure but his pass is knocked down by Kuth. On fourth-and-20, Holtz laterals to Natividad who throws back to Sulu and he has a lane down the sideline. He’s marked down right at midfield for a first down. Personal foul on first down moves the ball to the Leilehua 32. Holtz to Meyer for 12 yards. Personal foul for helmet contact moves the ball to the 10. 1:03 left. Short completion to the 7. Timeout Damien, :50. Monarchs have two left. Leilehua takes its final timeout. Iaea up the middle to the 2. Timeout Damien, :29. Iaea stopped at the 1. Fourth and goal. Holtz fakes the handoff, under pressure, his throw into the end zone is … incomplete. Leilehua holds. :04 left.


Leilehua starts at its  25. Loss of 2 on first down. Mules take their second timeout with 3:27 left. Akagi keeps for a gain of 2 then makes a 7-yard reception. Mules punt. Fair catch at the Damien 40. 2:00 left.

Monarchs pick up a couple of first downs and a personal foul advances the ball to the Leilehua 38. Holtz converts on third-and-8 to move the Monarchs to the 25. On another third down, Mules show blitz and Holtz makes them pay with an 18-yard TOUCHDOWN pass to Ezra Kaina. PAT blocked by Kuth again. 4:20 Q4.

Leilehua goes three-and-out and punt. Damien ball at its 14. 7:31 Q4.

Damien going exclusively with the pass now and go for it on fourth and 7. Pass to Sulu is incomplete and Leilehua takes over at the Damien 45.

Mules pick up a first down but penalties stall the drive. Leilehua punts. Damien ball at its 42. 9:34 Q4.

Damien starts at its 20. Holtz keeps for 15 and pass interference moves the ball to midfield. On second down, Pio sacks Holtz for a loss of 7. Monarchs punt. Leilehua ball at its 20. :31 Q3.

Kiaka Pio drags the onside kick in front of him and falls on it. Leilehua ball at the Damien 49. Akagi takes a pitch, this time he pulls up and throws deep to Ramos, who pulls it down and gets to the 2. Turnagan plunges in for the 2-yard TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. 2:42 Q3.

Touchback on the kickoff. Leilehua starts at its 20. Kalei Akagi takes a pitch around the left side, hits the sideline and is GONE, 80 yards, TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. 3:04 Q3.

Damien recovers the squib kick at its 32. Facemask on third and 11 extends the drive. Monarchs face fourth-and-2 at the Leilehua 35 and Sulu takes a pitch around the left side for 27 yards to the 8. Leilehua gets  stop on third down but the Mules are called for a horsecollar tackle. Third-and-goal again at the 5. Timeout Leilehua. River Iaea pounds it in for the 5-yard TOUCHDOWN. Unsportsmanlike conduct moves the PAT back to the 18. The kick is blocked by Ethan Kuth and it’s still tied. 3:19 Q3.

On first down, Turnagan goes deep to Ramos, who outjumps the defender and brings down a 28-yard TOUCHDOWN. PAT off the post. 8:01 Q3.

Personal foul on second down brings up third and 16 from the Damien 6. Deep ball incomplete. Monarchs punt takes a Leilehua bounce back to the Damien 28. 8:08 Q3.

Leilehua will receive the kickoff to open the second half. Ramos brings the ball out to the 33. Mules convert on a third down but the drive stalls at the Damien 49. Leilehua punts. Damien ball at its 12.


Turnagan goes into halftime 14-for-16 for 182 yards and two touchdowns for Leilehua. Sulu 93 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown for Damien.

On second and 17, Turnagan goes deep to Akagi for a 31-yard completion to the Damien 7 with :23 left in the half. Timeout Damien. On first-and-goal, Turnagan is sacked by Makanale’a Meyer for a loss of 10. Timeout Leilehua. Turnagan complete for 8 yards to the 9. Timeout with :11 left. Turnagan throws the fade to Ramos for a 9-yard TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. :05, Q2.

Damien moves out to the 31, but a holding call stalls the drive and the Monarchs punt. Leilehua ball at the Damien 45. 1:12 Q2.

Turnagan improves to 7-for-7 with a 13-yard completion to Akagi before throwing his first incompletion. Turnagan is sacked to bring up a third-and-16 but comes back with a deep post to Jayzon Ramos for 39 yards to the Damien 14. Turnagan’s next throw is intercepted at the goal line by Bubba Kauhi. Damien ball at its 3. 5:44 Q2.

Damien goes three-and-out with a loss of 2 on first down and two incompletions. Monarchs punt. Personal foul on the return gives Leilehua possession at its 41. 8:18 Q2.

Damien kicks it deep this time and Leilehua starts at its 31. Holding call brings up third-and-21. After a 3-yard completion, the Mules punt. A 16-yard return gives Damien possession at the Leilehua 40.

Monarchs go for the onside kick and Natividad recovers at the Leilehua 41. On third-and-5, Sulu breaks outside, gets a block downfield and goes the distance for a 36-yard TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. 11:46 Q2.

Damien starts at its 37 after the squib kick. Facemask penalty after a 6-yard completion moves the Monarchs to the Mules’ 38. Sulu converts on third and 6. Monarchs face a fourth-and-4 at the 21 and call timeout. Damien lines up for a 38-yard field goal. Mules block the kick but jump offside. First down Damien. Kicker Christian Souza is shaken up on the play. On third-and-8, Holtz throws a fade down the left side to Jarvis Natividad for a 14-yard TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. :31 kick.

Kekoa Turnagan starts at QB for Leilehua. Mules convert on their first two third-down situations and cross midfield on Turnagan’s scramble. Turnagan goes deep down the right side to Kalei Akagi, who was the starting QB to begin the season, for a 41-yard TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. 5:35, Q1.

Damien starts at its 30. Apereamo Sulu bounces outside for 23 yards on his first carry. Kiaka Pio and Ashton Raquino combine on a sack of Jake Holtz for a loss of 10. Monarchs punt and Leilehua takes over at its 20.

Leilehua wins the toss and defers. Damien will receive the opening kickoff.

Leilehua will officially be the visiting team on its senior night. Damien is the designated home team in this OIA-ILH Division I matchup.

    Wow, it sounds like it was an exciting, hard fought game all the way to the last second! Good job to both teams, but I’m happy the Mules won. This Division 1 race is looking a little tight this year. Which is how it should be. Exciting games happening year round! Mules gotta work on penalties, especially the personal fouls. Hopefully they’ll learn to do better with that from now on. Awesome seeing the original QB contributing so well running, receiving, and even passing this game! Good job again to both teams. Go Mules!
