GAME NIGHT 8/10: Saint Louis/Waianae

No. 1 Saint Louis 69, Waianae 6, Final

Sam scores in a big way again, this time a 61-yard burst on the left side. Saints lead 69-6 with 2:32 left.

Robbie Paikai’s dazzling second half just got a bonus with a 3-yard TD run. He had a breathtaking 45-yard gain down the right sideline earlier in the quarter that almost reached paydirt. Saint Louis leads 62-6 with 6:22 left.

Running clock winding this game down quickly, but backup quarterback Connor Apo tosses a 12-yard TD pass to Tama Albert Sula. Saint Louis leads 55-6 with 5:20 left in the third.

The Crusaders open the second half with a 79-yard kick return for a TD by Dayton Sam, a sophomore. Saint Louis 48-6 with 11:42 left in the third. Mercy-rule running clock in effect.

de Laura has had plenty of time most of the first half and his numbers reflect the protection: 9-for-12, 234 yards, three touchdowns, no picks, just one sack.

Waianae’s fourth punt is fair caught for a fourth time, all in Searider territory. Again, on the first play of the series, de Laura looks down the sideline and rifles a bullet to the other seam. This time it’s Koali Nishigaya who beats his defender by 5 yards and hauls it in for a 35-yard touchdown. Saint Louis leads 41-6 with 16 seconds left in the first half.

de Laura got sacked for a 13-yard loss, but bounced back despite the blitz scheme of Waianae. But this first-year slinger looks at times like he’s playing Madden back there. He has completions of 37 and 33 yards before Kainalu Tumpap scores on a 1-yard run. Saints lead 34-6 with 2:45 left in the first half.

Holey moley. Despite a dropped pass, de Laura needs only three plays to get the Crusaders back in the end zone. 23-yard strike to Wynden Hoohuli, then a 48-yard bomb down the right sideline to Roman Wilson. Mid-season form? Oh, yes. Saints lead 27-6, 9:03 left, second quarter.

Waianae drives to the Saint Louis 17 and stalls. Elijah Aken lines up for a 35-yard field goal, but it is a fake. Holder Chad Pule runs right, cuts back twice and scores on a 17-yard TD run. WOW. PAT is blocked, and Waianae is within 20-6 with 9:49 left in the second quarter.

The fourth series is Waianae’s best by far. They sustain thanks to a roughing-the-punter personal foul, and then on fourth-and-1, Saint Louis lines up in the neutral zone, encroaching. Cal Lee not happy, but his team leads 20-0 after one quarter. Could be better. Could be worse.

Waianae’s second punt is fair caught at the Waianae 29. TV time out, then de Laura launches down the right hashmarks to a wide-open Chance Beyer for an easy 29-yard TD. Saints lead 20-0 with 4:55 left, first quarter.

Jayden de Laura bails out of a jam in the pocket, then sprints to the left pylon and leaps into the end zone for a spectacular touchdown, his first TD as a Crusader. PAT is good and Saint Louis leads 13-0 with 7:01 left in the first. The Waianae side of the stadium is, maybe, in awe. Wow.

Waianae receives the opening kickoff and on second-and-16, Korvin Feagins picks off a Waianae pass and returns it 29 yards to the right pylon for the first score of the game. PAT is blocked, but Saint Louis leads quickly, 6-0.
