GAME NIGHT 8/30: Moanalua/Leilehua

Pio’s onside kick is recovered by Moanalua at its 48. Na Menehune take a knee and move into first place in the OIA D-I race.

Turnagan to Vasquez for 13 yards. After an incomplete pass, personal foul and unsportsmanlike on Moanalua moves the ball to the Moanalua 15. On third and 5 from the 10, Turnagan throws the fade to a wide-open Vasquez for the TOUCHDOWN. PAT kick short. :35 Q4.


Moanalua with three short runs and Leilehua uses all three timeouts. 1:34 left. Griffin Motas will attempt a 50-yard field goal. The kick is blocked and Leilehua recovers at its 45 with 1:29 left.

Turnagan’s first-down pass is intercepted by Aukai Grace who takes it inside the 10. Penalty moves it back to the Leilehua 35 but its Moanalua ball with 1:55 left.

Moanalua recovers the onside kick at its 48. After two short runs and a short pass, Moanalua lines up to punt and takes a delay of game. After the punt, Leilehua starts at its 20 with 2:04 left.

Turnagan converts with a 10-yard completion on fourth-and-8 and again on third-and-5 to move the Mules to the 12. Turnagan over the middle to Jonathan Vasquez, who powers into the end zone for the 12-yard TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. 4:27 Q4.

Kekoa Turnagan in at QB for Leilehua. His first two passes fall incomplete, his third is intercepted by Rashod Tanner. Moanalua gives it right back and Pio falls on the fumble at the Moanalua 37 with 6:32 left.

On second down, Akagi swings it out to Vereen, who is hit as the ball arrives. Moanalua’s Jett Tanigawa comes down with the interception and takes it back 32 yards for a Na Menehune TOUCHDOWN. PAT wide right. 7:39 Q4.

Moanalua goes with an empty backfield with Javar in the end zone. He hits Jansen York over the middle. York breaks a tackle, finds open field and he’s GONE for the 99-yard TOUCHDOWN. PAT failed again. 8:38 Q4.

Mules face third-and-2 at their 15. Pass interference on a short throw extends the drive. On second down, Akagi to Ramos for 22 yards to midfield. Moanalua takes its first timeout with 9:20 left. Akagi has 102 passing yards, 94 to Ramos. Two drops by open receivers stall the drive. Mules punt rolls to the Moanalua 1 with 8:54 left.

After a short run, Javar with two completions for 20 yards to move to the Leilehua 29. There’s a delay for an apparent injury to one of the officials who got caught up in the play. Looks like he’s OK and play resumes. On third and 1, Javar is sacked for a loss of 8 by Cy Acohido and Ashton Raquino. Fourth quarter starts with Na Menehune facing fourth-and-9 at the Leilehua 37. Javar with the pooch punt down to the Leilehua 7.

Leilehua starts at its 37. Akagi completes two throws, both for no gain. Third down pass is incomplete. Unsportsmanlike conduct on the Mules moves the ball back to the 22. Moanalua takes over at midfield after the punt. 2:38 Q3.

Javar to York for 7 yard on first down. Javar is hammered again by Pio and his pass falls incomplete. On third-and-8 Javar looks for Jansen York, who leaps to make a fingertip catch and takes it upfield for a gain of 20 to the 47. Javar to Domingo for 11 yards on third and 9, roughing the passer moves the ball to the Leilehua 25. Javar to Rudy Kealohi for 17 to the Mules 8. On second and goal, Javar fakes play action, rolls right and finds Kealohi for the 6-yard TOUCHDOWN pass. PAT blocked by Pio. 4:20 Q3.


On third-and-12, Akagi hits Ramos for 11 yards and the Mules punt. Moanalua ball at its 25.

Moanalua will receive the kickoff to start the second half. Na Menehune start at their 37. Moanalua goes three-and-out. Leilehua takes over at its 25 after the punt.

Leilehua starts at its 28 with 1:12 left in the half. Damarion Smith picks up 9 on second down, first down at the Mules’ 40. Timeout Moanalua with :26 left. Deep ball incomplete. Smith breaks loose around the left side and gets to the Moanalua 29 but fumbles. Na Menehune recover with :06 left and run out the clock.

Javar completes back-to-back throws to move Na Menehune to the Leilehua 37. On third and 7, he finds Jansen York crossing over the middle for 22 yards. Kiaka Pio comes up with his third tackle for loss on a 5-yard sack. Javar converts on third down again with a 13-yard strike to Dacyres Domingo. First-and-goal at the 7. Leilehua timeout. Javar on a keeper for 2. Javar fakes the handoff to Darius Johnson, who then releases into the end zone and catches a 5-yard TOUCHDOWN pass. PAT blocked. 1:18 Q2.

Holding penalty pushes Leilehua back to its 22. Marcus Marion comes from the blind side for a punishing sack on Akagi on second down. Mules punt and Moanalua starts at the 45.

The kickoff is fumbled but Moanalua recovers at its 30. Javar is sacked twice, but a facemask on the second gives Moanalua a first down at its 44. Drive stalls there and Moanalua punts for the third time. Leilehua starts at its 32.

Leilehua offensive line opening room up the middle for Damarion Smith, who picks up 23 yards on three carries. His fourth straight handoff goes for a loss of 3 back to the Moanalua 38. Quarter ends with the Mules facing third and 8. Akagi converts with a 9-yard completion to Ramos. The duo connect again for 17 yards to the Moanalua 1. Jamil Vereen scores on a 1-yd TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. 10:15 Q2.

Leilehua can’t do anything with the field position and punts from its 49. Moanalua starts at its 15. A facemask on a sack gives Na Menehune second and 1 at their 24. Javar’s pass is batted into the air and he comes down with it for a reception. He’s short of the first down. His third-down pass is batted down and Moanalua punts.

RJ Javar’s first pass goes for 14 yards and first down. But he mishandles a snap for a loss of 8. Kiaka Pio stops him for a 1 yard gain and Laakea Umiamaka comes up with a crushing sack on third down. The punt is blocked by Vitale Afoa and rolls forward to the Moanalua 37.

Leilehua drives to the Moanalua 17 on a 35-yard completion from Kalei Akagi to Jayzon Ramos. Two plays later, Akagi throws a fade to the end zone and it’s intercepted by Moanalua’s Rashod Tanner.


Moanalua wins the toss and defers. Leilehua will receive the opening kickoff.
