GAME NIGHT 8/15: McKinley/Pearl City

Tobosa picks up 13 on fourth and 6 and the Chargers run out the clock to finish off their first win of the season.

McKinley starts at its 24. Two incomplete passes and an 8-yard scramble by Leopoldo. Timeout before fourth down. Handoff up the middle gets past the marker, but the ball comes loose and Pearl City recovers at the McKinley 42. 4:07 left.

Rastin Tobosa in at QB for Pearl City. Tobosa with a 4-yard keeper. Victor Atkins takes a handoff and takes it another 4 yards for a TOUCHDOWN. PAT blocked. 4:42 Q4.


McKinley starts at its 9. Leopoldo scrambles for 7 on second down but his next pass fall incomplete and the Tigers punt. Bishop Foumai gets a nice block and returns it to the 20, but offsetting penalties will force another punt. The snap is high, Sheindlin snares it and decides to take off and is stopped at the 8. Pearl City first-and-goal with 5:25 left.

Pearl City goes three-and-out and punts from the end zone. The return is mishandled and the Chargers recover at their 38. On third-and-5, Canyon fires short over the middle to Preston Hong and he breaks free for a 57-yard TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. 6:30 Q4.

Kaena Leopoldo takes over at QB for McKinley. Tigers get a first down on a personal foul on Pearl City. Leopoldo connects on three of his next four throws for 42 yards to move the Tigers to the Pearl City 22. On third-and-10, Leopoldo scrambles for 7 on the final play of the third quarter. McKinley with fourth-and-3 at the Pearl City 15. Leopoldo complete to Pham for 4 yards and a first down. Tigers lose a yard on first down, next two passes fall incomplete and face another fourth down at the Pearl City 12. McKinley takes a timeout. Leopoldo throws a fade and pass interference gives McKinley another shot at fourth down. Pass falls incomplete and Pearl City takes over.

Pearl City goes three-and-out. Gleason’s punt is downed at the 5. Penalty on Pearl City forces the Chargers to punt again from the 47. This time it goes out of bounds at the McKinley 16, where the Tigers take over with 2:30 left in the third quarter.

McKinley starts at its 22 and Pimental is dropped for a 12-yard loss by Tristen McKinney on second down. Tigers punt and Pearl City takes over at the Tigers’ 32.

McKinley starts at its 20. On second down Afoa takes the ball away from Pham and Pearl City takes over at the McKinley 15.  The Chargers move backward and face third-and-20 from the 25. Canyon escapes to his right and finds Isaiah Cruz-Amerperosa wide open in the end zone. TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. 6:17 Q3

Gaspar gets loose down the right side for a 29-yard run on first down. Canyon with a deep ball to Gleason for 40 to the McKinley 15. Holding call on a screen pass moved the ball back to the 17. Gaspar picks up 5, Canyon’s next two throws fall incomplete. Landon Chang with his secondn FIELD GOAL, this one from 29 yards. 8:33 Q3

McKinley receives the kickoff to start the second half and will start at its 25 after a fair catch. After going 0-for-5 in the first half, Pimental fires deep and connects with Aaron Velasco, who gets to the Pearl City 10 before being pushed out of bounds. Two incomplete passes to Jayden Victorino and a sack by Nu’usegi Afoa back to the 16. Another incomplete pass and Pearl City takes over.

Pearl City with 199 yards in total offense in the first half to 28 for McKinley, all on the ground.


Pearl City takes timeout with 53.8 seconds left and McKinley facing third-and-9 at its 20. After a 7-yard run Tigers run the clock down to 5 seconds and take timeout. Another run up the middle and that’s the half.

Pearl City goes three and out and punts. McKinley ball at its 19 with 1:08 left in the half.

Tigers can’t do anything with the turnover and go three and out. Pearl City takes over at its 29 with 2:36 left in the half.

Pearl City picks up two first downs and crosses midfield on Gaspar’s 13 yard run. On third-and-3, Canyon connects with Cruz-Amerperosa, who fumbles as he fights for more yardage. Tigers recover at their 33.

Kickoff goes out of bounds, McKinley starts at its 35. Tigers pick up a first down on a 10-yard run by Franklin Pham. The next three plays pick up 1 yards and the Tigers will punt from midfield. The Pearl City returner tries to field the punt on the run but it gets by, McKinley recovers at the Pearl City 7. Pham takes a loss of 3 then picks up 4. Incomplete pass on third down and McKinley takes timeout. Tigers go for it and a pass to the flat falls incomplete. Pearl City takes over at its 6. 8:08 Q2.

Chargers face fourth-and-2 at the McKinley 34 and Gaspar bounces outside for a 7-yard gain. Canyon keeps it for 11 yards. Chargers with fourth-and-4 at the McKinley 10 to start the second quarter. Landon Chang with a 27-yard FIELD GOAL. 11:55 Q2.

McKinley starts at its 42. Keanu Pimental starts at QB for the Tigers, who go three-and-out. The punt snap is low and Tyler Sheindlin is dropped for a loss of 1. Pearl City takes over at the McKinley 42.

Pearl City starts at its 21. Makana Canyon starts at QB. A holding call brings up third and 14 and Canyon goes deep to Joshua Gleason for 33 yards. Chargers face a second-and-23 at the McKinley 38 and Canyon finds Isaiah Cruz-Amerperosa on a WR screen and it pops for 33 yards. Ali’i Gaspar from 5 yards out, TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. 7:07 Q1.


McKinley wins the toss and defers. Pearl City will receive the opening kickoff.
