GAME NIGHT 10/5: Kailua/Aiea

Kailua 17, Aiea 14, FINAL

———-

10:54: WHAT. Kailua fumbles on a QB sneak and Aiea recovers at the Kailua 5. Na Alii goes for it, but Castillo’s pass sails out of the end zone. Kailua wins 17-14. Wild finish to a long game.

10:52: Castillo is intercepted at the Kailua 1, and the Surfriders take over with 8 seconds left. Kailua calls a timeout to discuss whether it will take a safety or run up the middle.

10:49: Castillo appeared to have thrown an interception, but the refs call it incomplete instead. Na Alii are on the Kailua 30 with 16 seconds left.

10:45: After an encroachment call on Kailua, Aiea converts after a 20-yard pass from Castillo to Kalahiki-Basque. After another completion, Na Alii now have the ball on the Kailua 36 with 35 seconds left.

10:44: Aiea calls its last timeout facing fourth-and-8 from its own 33 with 1:21 left. This is for the ballgame.

10:43: Aiea calls a timeout with 1:32 left facing third-and-5 from its own 36.

10:38: Kailua punts again and Aiea has 4:09 to either tie or take the lead from their own 20 after a touchback.

10:30: Another three-and-out for Aiea on three consecutive rushes. Kailua takes over on its own 46 with 6:27 left.

10:26: The Surfriders elect to kick a 32-yard field goal, but it’s wide right. Aiea takes the ball back with 8:33 left. It’s starting to pour here in Kailua.

10:23: Three straight incompletions for Aiea on its own 1 puts Na Alii deep in their own end zone for the punt. Kailua takes advantage and starts the next drive at the Aiea 20 after a nice return.

10:15: Kailua is forced to punt again but downs the punt at the Aiea 1 with 11:35 left in the third.

FOURTH QUARTER

10:12: End of the third. Kailua leads 17-14 and has the ball on its own 47 to start the fourth quarter.

10:11: Aiea’s offense has been hot and cold all night, and after another three-and-out, Na Alii are forced to punt again.

10:06: Brian-Allen Kamanu has taken over as the feature back for Kailua in the second half, and he gives the Surfriders their first lead of the game with a six-yard rushing score. Williams’ PAT is good and Kailua leads 17-14 with 1:24 left in the third.

9:55: Kailua forces a quick three-and-out, and starts again on offense from its own 38 with 5:25 to go in the third.

9:53: The Surfriders use of plenty of clock during this drive, but don’t have anything to show for it after coming up short on fourth and inches. Aiea takes over from its own 31 with 5:47 left in the third.

9:41: Wild sequence. After Kailua fumbles on its own 11, Castillo throws his second interception of the day during the next play to Solomon Farley. The Surfriders get the ball back on their own 10 with 11:33 left in the third quarter.

9:38: Kailua starts the second half from its own 15 after the kickoff.

THIRD QUARTER

9:22: Kailua quarterback Kaniala Williams connects with Raynen Ho-Mook at the Aiea 4 with three seconds to go in the half. After a Kailua timeout, the Surfriders decide not to kick the field goal, and the risk pays off. Williams gets the snap, takes it to the right and barely gets in after time expires. Roberts’ PAT is good and Kailua trails 14-10 heading into halftime. The Surfriders have all the momentum and even receive the second half kickoff.

9:16: Castillo is picked off by Ha’aheo Tarvis-Moku, who takes it to the Aiea 25 with 13 seconds left in the half.

9:13: Kailua faces fourth down on the Aiea 40 and ultimately decides to punt after a timeout. Aiea ball on its own 20 after a touchback with 48 seconds left in the half.

9:00: That was quick. On the next play, Castillo and Fabian Bautista hook up for a two-yard score. Hulett’s PAT is good and Na Alii extends their lead to 14-3 with 4:31 left in the half.

8:57: Na Alii strike right back with a 68-yard pass from Castillo to Babu Capanang to the Kailua 2, but Capanang is down.

8:54: The Surfriders end a slow and methodical drive (that was prolonged by an injury break) with a Maka Roberts field goal from 33 yards out to get on the board. Still, Aiea leads 7-3 with 4:58 left in the half.

8:36: TOUCHDOWN AIEA. On their first offensive play of the second quarter, Na Alii quarterback Kayson Castillo connects with Dylan Soberano on a short pass, and Soberano does the rest, zooming 65 yards to the end zone. Thomas Hulett‘s PAT is good and Aiea leads 7-0 with 11:30 left in the second quarter.

8:35: Kailua punts after another three-and-out. Aiea starts its first drive of the second quarter from its own 35.

SECOND QUARTER

8:21: Aiea lines up for a punt and goes for a fake, but Zacharia Kalahiki-Basque‘s pass is incomplete and almost intercepted. Kailua takes over from its own 38 with 5:20 left in the first.
