No. 1 Saint Louis 42, No. 7 Kamehameha 7, FINAL 4Q
———-
9:55: Saint Louis takes a knee. Over.
9:54: Running clock for the last few minutes. Kamehameha fumbles, recovered by Saint Louis at the Warriors; 29 with a minute left.
9:50: Chandon Sappal throws a swing pass to Prince Solomon, and he tiptoes the left sideline for the 19-yard touchdown with 4:18 left.
9:49: Saint Louis getting in all manner of backup QBs and RBs in now … and they’re moving it up the field.
9:43: Keone gets a first down for his team up to the 25, but that’s it. Saint Louis fair catches it from its 41 with 7:52 left.
9:39: Saint Louis punts for, I think, only the second time tonight. Warriors from their 9.
9:35: New quarterback in there for Saint Louis. It’s Connor Apo. He moves his team up near midfield as the third quarter comes to an end, Crusaders leading 35-7. That was a 21-point quarter for Cal Lee’s team.
9:31: Kiai Keone completes a few passes for Kamehameha, getting his team up near midfield — but that’s it. Saint Louis takes over on its 18.
9:21: Boy, that escalated quickly. Kamehameha’s first play of the drive results in a 3-yard pick-6 by Nicholas Herbig of Keone. This game has been totally blown open.
9:20: Kamehameha muffs the kickoff return and will start at its 2.
9:18: Saint Louis wastes no time parlaying the excellent position — it took over on the Kamehameha 35 — into a score. Three plays, in fact, as de Laura finds Koali Nishigaya for a 33-yard touchdown. De Laura’s third TD pass of the night.
9:14: New quarterback in for Kamehameha. It was Kiai Keone, but he’s brought down for a sack and Kamehameha gets off a short punt.
9:07: Dayton Sam’s power running — 21 yards on an impressive jaunt — sets up Robbie Paikai’s 2-yard score up the middle. Crusaders back in control.
9:04: Saint Louis is marching into Warrior territory, but there’s a player down … it’s offensive lineman Rod Dupont. He’s able to get off the field unassisted.
9:01: De Laura gets it started with a 19-yard keeper, but he’s brought down for a sack on the next play.
9:00: Here comes the third quarter. Kamehameha kicks off to Saint Louis … touchback.
8:51: Saint Louis linebacker Jordan Botelho with nine tackles, including a sack to lead all defensive players at the break.
8:48: At halftime, Jayden de Laura with 228 yards on 13-for-15 passing and two touchdowns, both to Roman Wilson, who’s got two grabs for 75 yards. Christmas Togiai is 7-for-11 for 70 yards and a TD for Kamehameha.
8:44: Soma Kasahara’s 53-yard field-goal attempt is well short. Saint Louis with just a 14-7 lead at halftime.
8:42: De Laura takes a sack with 5 seconds left at the 36. Saint Louis burns its last timeout.
8:38: Crusaders look determined to get the last word of the half. First play from scrimmage with 37 left, de Laura finds Chance Beyer over the middle for a gain of 42. Ball in Kamehameha territory with 25 seconds left.
8:36: WE GOT US A GAME. Kamehameha takes advantage of the Saint Louis miscue. After a false start pushes the Warriors back to the 9, Christmas Togiai, under pressure, lobs a ball to Titus Maunakea, who has to turn around for it and catches it low … but in the end zone. XP is good and Warriors back within a score just before the half.
8:32: Again, Kamehameha gets up to about the Kamehameha 40, then the drive stalls and the Warriors have to punt. Looked like it squirted free on the return at the 4, and a Warrior scooped it up for a TD, but the officials ruled the ball was dead at the 4. Nevertheless, great chance for Kamehameha to get on the board here just before halftime. Warriors ball at the 4.
8:26: That’s two catches, two touchdowns for Wilson, who entered the night with five on the season.
8:24: Saint Louis needs three plays to get midfield. Then, Roman Wilson runs a perfect post route and de Laura drops a perfect pass to him, totally in stride. He’s gone, second TD between the two tonight is a 50-yarder.
8:19: Back-to-back nice throws by Christmas Togiai has Kamehameha up to the Saints’ 40. But then … Jordan Botelho stuffs a run for no gain, and Nicholas Herbig sacks Togiai for a loss of 7. Warriors have to punt, and it’s a short one. Saint Louis takes over from its 36.
8:12: Kamehameha D steps up. De Laura scrambles, evades, looks deep … and can’t find anybody. On third and 11, he tries to tuck it for the first down but gets only 6 and Saint Louis has to punt. Kamehameha takes over on its 8.
8:09: Drive stalls after that for the Warriors. They punt and Saint Louis fair catches it at its own 21.
8:07: After the field is flipped, Kamehameha picks up the first down on a 3-yard run by Braden Akima.
8:05: First quarter ends with Kamehameha facing third and 1 at its own 34. Couple of nice runs by Alec Serrao.
8:03: Crusaders go for it on fourth and 1 in Kamehameha territory for the second time tonight … and this time Robbie Paikai is denied by the Warriors at the 25.
7:57: Very quick three-and-out for Kamehameha, which manages 5 yards on a Togiai pass to Brock Ai, but no more, as Alec Serrao is stopped twice for no gain on the ground.
7:53: Crusaders QB Jayden de Laura caps the 85-yard drive by finding Roman Wilson in the center of the end zone for a 25-yard scoring pass. On that drive, de Laura was 5-for-6 for 79 yards.
7:50: Saint Louis faces fourth and 1 from the Kamehameha 45 and gets it behind fullback Dayton Sam. The drive continues.
7:44: A couple of nice passes by Kamehameha QB Christmas Togiai gets the chains moving. The Warriors get all the way up to the Kamehameha 43 before the drive stalls, as the Crusaders get a tackle for loss then a sack. They punt to the Saint Louis 15.
7:39: We’re underway. Saint Louis kicks off to Kamehameha.
7:36: Teams are going through introductions right now. Gonna be starting a little late.
7:24 p.m.: Some heavy rains in Halawa leading up to game time, but it looks like it’s eased up just before kickoff. Saw one flash of lightning in the sky but that’s it.
