Punahou graduate and current San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman DeForest Buckner will serve as one of two honorary captains for the 2018 Polynesian Bowl in January at Aloha Stadium.
Buckner, the No. 7 overall pick of the 49ers, was the Pac-12 defensive player of the year in his senior season at Oregon and also a first team All-State selection in football at Punahou. The other honorary captain will be Danny Shelton, a defensive tackle for the Cleveland Browns.
Fellow Oregon alum Marcus Mariota was one of the two honorary captains for the inaugural Polynesian Bowl played this past January.
The bowl also announced Monday that Mariota, offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley of the Baltimore Ravens, Michael Bennett of the Seattle Seahawks and rookie wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster of the Pittsburgh Steelers have been named ambassadors for the 2018 Polynesian Bowl.
“In less than a year, the Polynesian Bowl has become one of the nation’s premier high school football all-star games,” Mariota said in a press release. “I am honored to be part of this special celebration of culture and football.”
“I look forward to welcoming the best high school football players to Hawaii,” added Bennett, who lives on Oahu in the offseason. “There is no place more beautiful than the Aloha State.”
