Don Botelho does not like the word “retire.”

And, so when it was announced that he was stepping down from the post of ILH executive director in June, he didn’t love the phrasing “Botehlo retires,” even though it was technically true.

“He’ll never retire,” one of his assistants said a few days after the June announcement.

Well, Botelho, 83, — who held the position from 2003 to ’15, has stayed true to his convictions. He’s assisting ILH interim executive secretary Georges Gilbert and others in the league office however he can.

“Still, yet,” he said on the phone earlier this week. “I come in every morning to help out in different areas.

“It keeps me out of trouble.”
