With the Interscholastic League of Honolulu having much to gain with the recent format change to the state football tournaments, it’s no surprise that Punahou coach Kale Ane is pleased.

The longtime coach and assistant athletic director found out about the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s decision after Punahou’s late-afternoon practice on Monday.

“Great news for all of us. Very appreciative to those who got this done,” Ane texted. “Looking forward to an exciting year and an exciting finish.”

Punahou won Division I state championships in 2008 and ’13, and also lost the title game in ’05, ’11, ’12 and ’14.

    Why wouldn’t he be? Punahou and St Louis are automatic locks for a playoff spot!!!

  2. 87 August 24, 2016 7:45 am

    When the ILH aint winning titles something is wrong and changes need to be made, one of those elitist teams couldnt get the job done so now they are sending two. RR4L

  4. red x August 24, 2016 8:37 am

    Thank you punahou for making this happen!

  5. iSpeakReality August 24, 2016 9:40 am

    Same guys keep crying… LMAO!

    Look at the whole OIA. How does 4 teams get state births & 3 of them is clearly trash comparing them to the 2nd place ILH team? The 3rd place ILH team is better than the OIA 3rd & 4th seed. And that’s been clear since this state tournament was created. You want a competitive state tournament? The best teams to playoff? Bringing in a 2nd ILH is what the state needs.

    IT AIN’T NO CAKE WALK ANYMORE!

  6. TooMeke August 24, 2016 9:45 am

    zzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    Das RIGHT ‘REALITY’!!

    No more cakewalks!! (except for the ILH regular season that is a joke…oops)

    Now Punahou AND St LuLu can BOTH get smashed by the SEA OF RED in da playoffs!

    And then what will they do next year? Limit to 2 OIA teams with the condition that Kahuku is excluded?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA! Don’t explain your life. Just come watch as we roll over both ILH teams in States this year. Goooooooooooooooooood night.

    zzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz

  7. iSpeakReality August 24, 2016 10:02 am

    OIA Red
    Mililani
    Farrington
    Leilehua
    Kapolei
    Kailua
    Castle

    OIA Blue
    Kahuku
    Waianae
    Campbell
    Kaiser
    Moanalua
    Aiea

    What four teams is better than an ILH 2nd seed? Pick em wisely because you get choke for choose from.. LMAO! #RubbishLeague

  8. The Red Sea August 24, 2016 10:09 am

    Just take the 1970-1999 OIA VS. ILH PREP BOWL format back. One game, one champ. Done.

  9. The Red Sea August 24, 2016 10:13 am

    ISR, Teo says ” Nobody remembers 2econds”.

  10. The Red Sea August 24, 2016 10:17 am

    After this year the HHSAA pilot program will change the format to 3 ILH and 3 OIA teams. Lol.

  11. bumbuchas August 24, 2016 10:25 am

    Private schools will now take the recruiting to a new high level! Hire Miano to recruit for their schools! Good for the kids though, free ed surrounded by motivated peer group!

  12. bumbuchas August 24, 2016 10:27 am

    make sure to put the ILH #1 & #2 in the same bracket!

  13. iSpeakReality August 24, 2016 10:28 am

    @The Red Sea

    Rajah dat!

    Prep Bowl Style:
    Best from OIA vs Best from ILH

    And screw the D2, let em be practice games for the 3rd string all season.

  14. bumbuchas August 24, 2016 10:30 am

    The 3 Tiers of HHSAA FB championships is good especially the inclusion of D1, more schools can participate and the top D1 schools can play each other in the Open division. Keep the regular season the same; separate ILH and OIA, no mix em.

  15. Education First August 24, 2016 10:53 am

    The OIA has one consistently good team and that is Kahuku. And Kahuku should win every year since they have a huge advantage. Look at their curriculum that consists of finger painting, dodgeball, arithmetic, haka, and pokemon hunting. They don’t have the academic rigor of Iolani and Punahou. (I’m sorry but I cannot sit here and type that STL has high academics).

    The rest of the OIA is consistently crap other than Mililani on a few occasions. Farrington never does anything in states.

    Rewarding leagues purely on total amount of teams is ridiculous. Tournaments are to reward the best teams, not the leagues with the most teams.

    But, no one ever factors that the curriculum at Kahuku is a joke which gives them a HUGE advantage.

  16. turfwar August 24, 2016 10:56 am

    The very best thing to come out of this new format is that most everybody will have a chance to play more games. These kids work much too hard to finish a season after only 6 or 7 games as has happened in the past.

  17. iSpeakReality August 24, 2016 11:04 am

    @Education First

    I agree…. LMAO!
    Farrington is only good for the first round of the state tournament. Anything past that is a historical accomplishment. Waianae is the same but they been having the luxury of playing weak outer island teams.

  18. Alpha August 24, 2016 12:39 pm

    Okay okay Education first and iSpeakReality….. you guys have made the ilh proud here at HPW, I’m sure your certificate of appreciation will be in the mail soon. Now, hasn’t it been the best from oia vs ilh since the states started?…… so what’s the the trash talking for?….

  19. Aku Bird August 24, 2016 1:50 pm

    @Education Last
    Here we go again with you crying about academics, you just MAD cause Kahuku crushed your high academic (joke)
    Puna”hoe” in their last championship game. Funny as Hell cause Puna”hoe” always recruit Kahuku kids who you said have caveman GPA’s to stock their team. 🙂

  20. Givemeurbbds! August 24, 2016 2:35 pm

    No bradda @alpha it been the OIA best 3 teams vs ILH 1 best team c mon open your mind Quade. Quade open your mind!!!

  21. "UNITY=STRENGHT" August 24, 2016 2:45 pm

    If the Coachs heard these comments they would be shaking there heads lots of good friends between OIA and ILH these kinds of comments should not be used here childish to say the least.

  22. Alpha August 24, 2016 3:05 pm

    @givemeurbbds…… so who’s been playing in the state championship game all these years? I know ilh been sending 1 representative, so now the rules allow 2 since one ilh school can’t garuntee to get the job done? Please @bbdsSir….. elaborate.

  23. Givemeurbbds! August 24, 2016 3:07 pm

    Cant take the heat get out the kitchen. This is fresdom of speech u can choose not to be here my bradda

  24. iSpeakReality August 24, 2016 4:12 pm

    @Alpha

    You gotta tell me how the 2nd,3rd & 4th OIA seeds is worst than the ILH 2nd place every year since this state tournament was created. It ain’t about “getting it done” its about a fair shot & a well deserved 2nd seed for the ILH. Its not like the tournament is losing value. Its making it more competitive. The only way i see any getting all mad about this is because they don’t want to play more than one ILH team of be the #1 seed OIA in the same bracket as ILH #2..

  25. 87 August 24, 2016 4:13 pm

    ispeak and givemeddbs are the same person, the little beach boy that had to pay full tuition to warm the bench at St. Louis, hahaha, Kahuku kids arent that mento we dont go there unless its paid for bro, thats why theres only one Kahuku kid there and thats why the lulu is not gonna go all the way.

  26. Alpha August 24, 2016 4:39 pm

    @iSpeakReality…… no argument there, the past seasons Punahou or St. Louis had some awesome teams but lose out at the chance at states due to the old format. I’m an oia guy and I know oia fans would not like the fact that the chance of an all ilh state championship game is now more likely….. HHSAA just up the ante with this format so it’s pretty much the top 4 oia schools need to get on their shii and produce a better quality program with whoever they have. Or we will be seeing ilh dominate the states in the near future….

  27. iSpeakReality August 24, 2016 4:42 pm

    @87

    Haha! Little did you know, all the Kahuku kids had to pay something. You think its free?? Hell no! Like I mentioned before, until you stop living through the Kahuku kids playing high school football than you making progress. Or being a parent thinking their kids is the next “big thing” & cannot make it out of Kahuku because they cannot read or write. I’m telling you, you guys is one dimensional out there. Football or nothing. And the percentages say NOTHING more than “football”. No take one rocket scientist for dance at PCC for the first 10yrs out of high school because no more direction.

  28. 87 August 24, 2016 5:16 pm

    Okay, skinny little braddah boy I didnt know you can afford a iphone to post from sandy beach on a 4G. Hows the waves? You rush um?

  29. Givemeurbbds August 24, 2016 5:20 pm

    @alpha cmon quade open your mind lol. In 1999, the state change the prep bowl format which was OIA best and ILH best. One game for the championship. The OIA lost 15 in a row and called it unfair. They changed it to a 8 team format 1 ILH 4 OIA and 3 outerisland. Why did the OIA need four chances to win one. Elaborate for me @ alpha The outerisland never made it to a d1 championship ever. U tell me what was wrong with the prep bowl system elaborate my bradda?

  30. Givemeurbbds August 24, 2016 5:23 pm

    @87 quit why u still got some dignity. Go back to living teenagers dreams for the rest of your life. Couldnt cut it when u was in school got a dangle on to teenagers. Grow up my bradda. Sole whatever the hell u are.

  31. Givemeurbbds August 24, 2016 5:26 pm

    U tell me @87 u da coconut bomb that live by the beach. I aint skinny either cuz i would take ur bbds

  32. iSpeakReality August 24, 2016 5:27 pm

    @Alpha

    I think.the format of 3 divisions is trash. They should of kept the same D1 & D2 but just add the 2nd ILH. It would of been straight with one more valued team to play in the D1. I think the 4th OIA seed is meaningless because I have yet to see any progress out of the first round. And the outer island is just a walk through every year. OIA travels to outer island buss them up, coaches on vacation, just a waste of money.

  33. C-Pop August 24, 2016 5:37 pm

    Glad to finally get a second deserving ILH team into the State football tourney, I’ve always believed St. Louis, Punahou, or Kamehameha were top six most talented teams in Division 1 and state for at least past 20 years give or take. OIA has definitely monopolized states after Prep Bowl format ended, good to see ILH representing again, in all three tiers.

  34. C-Pop August 24, 2016 5:49 pm

    Big Island Interschlastic Federation (BIIF) Division 1 has lost 17 straight state first round games, close games by Kealakehe in 2004 (21-14 Waianae), 2006 (21-18 Waianae), 2011 (Leilehua 5 pt loss), 2012 (Farrington 34-25). Hilo 2013 (Kahuku 20-10). Lately BIIF not close, BIIF all should be in Division 2, my opinion!

  35. Flying Eagle August 24, 2016 6:13 pm

    Kahuku is light years ahead of any team in Hawaii this year . Once Maiava and Ah Hoy get use to there positions it will only be a matter of time.

  36. Alpha August 24, 2016 6:19 pm

    Agreed @iSpeakReality, it makes sense but that’s the problem with this state. I work for the state and know that if it make sense it Won’t Happen. The powers that be won’t allow commoners like us have a say so whether it make sense or not they make the call….

  37. iSpeakReality August 24, 2016 6:40 pm

    Wow! Eassssy with the “Light Years Ahead” LMAO!

  38. 87 August 24, 2016 6:47 pm

    St Louis won all those prep bowls because they had 19yr old Seniors. Once the State tourney started in 1999 the rule was those 19yr olds cant play….and that was the end of the cheating dynasty.

  39. iSpeakReality August 24, 2016 7:23 pm

    @87
    And you RR4L peeps should know. You guys tried to sneak a scrub pass the legal lines. LMAO! I don’t even know why you bringing this up. You guys tried to cheat… #TryAgain

  40. iSpeakReality August 24, 2016 7:30 pm

    @87

    Bro it ain’t even about debating about teams or leagues anymore. Its more about you just sounding silly bringing up the same trash on repeat like one parrot. You know what guys like you do? You excuses when they fail, no can man up & recognize game. And people like you pass the same torch & vibe to the next generation. That’s why you sad, you was mediocre all your life. That’s why the mind is small..No can see pass Kahuku. Stuck in the mud.

  41. 2 rings August 24, 2016 7:44 pm

    @87 there u go talking ahead of your brain. I swear kahuku got their title stripped for cheating. Thats why torres got fired get real my bradda and one of the boys when commit suicide over kahukus stupidity. No talk @87 ur brain is stuck in the mud.

  42. 2 rings August 24, 2016 7:46 pm

    Making excuses again u not tired do that your whole life @87 bridesmaid

  43. Alpha August 24, 2016 8:22 pm

    @givemeyourbbds…. nothing was wrong with the prep Bowl format. I wish that was still going, but what is the difference from the ilh of the prep Bowl Era and the ilh of this one? Every ilh team that played in the state championship Era since 1999 was the #1 ilh team, same as the prep Bowl Era correct? That’s my whole point…. when ilh Chapman is crowned they would play the oia champ, but now it’s unfair because the ilh champ doesn’t play oia champ but gets thrown in a bracket to play for a state title which to me that’s unfair…. it should be prepared Bowl format…. but politics makes the kids play more games to bring in more revenue so the kids lose out. Yes more games but at the cost of being a pawn to the states bank roll…

  44. Givemeurbbds August 24, 2016 10:30 pm

    @flyingeagle light years hahaha u going find out how the light years workout sept 17th and late november. Night night BG and the crusaders are coming!!

  45. iSpeakReality August 24, 2016 10:44 pm

    @givemeurbbds

    “Light years” is a first….LMAO! He had to google that word before using it. That’s huge vocabulary for below average reading level.

  46. atbbatman August 24, 2016 11:29 pm

    At least the OIA schools have a 2.0 rule to play, the ILH is only 1.7
    really D students.
    Check the school facts about the Academics, don’t just assume,
    cause you know what happens when you ASSUME………

  47. RuggedSlopes August 24, 2016 11:53 pm

    Per atBBatman
    OIA has a 2.0 rule to play & produces 1% of athletes to go to college.

    ILH has a “1.7 & are really D students” & produces college athletes.

    I don’t get it. The number of ILH kids to go beyond high school is greater than OIA kids. Its not biase statement, its simple fact.

  48. Flying Eagle August 25, 2016 12:01 am

    @Givemeurbbds
    I said in the state of Hawaii I’m not talking about September 17
    You have others questioning my reading level when this Crusader fan can’t even read what I said.
    Like I said light years brah

  49. RuggedSlopes August 25, 2016 12:04 am

    That’s a big word:

    “LIGHT YEARS”

  50. Givemeurbbds August 25, 2016 6:03 am

    @alpha i agree with the prep bowl format. Should be longer seasons and one bowl game. It only prepares them for the next level. Format is similar.
