All 23 Neighbor Island teams have at least 1 loss

The Neighbor Islands are devoid of an undefeated football team.

Usually at this time of year, there are one or two squads from either the Big Island, Kauai and Maui who don’t have a blemish on their overall record.

Hilo was the last holdout. The Vikings, who were ranked No. 6 in last week’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 after some impressive early season wins, fell to Konawaena, 24-14, on Friday.

The Vikings (4-1, 3-1 Big Island Interscholastic Federation) retained a one-game lead over Kealakehe in the league’s D-I standings.

In BIIF D-II league games, Konawaena (4-2 overall) and Kamehameha-Hawaii (6-2 overall) are at 4-0 and headed for a showdown Sept. 29 at the Warriors’ home field.

SHAKEUP IN KIF AND MIL

In the two other Neighbor Island 11-man football leagues, it doesn’t appear that anyone will be cake-walking to the title either.

On Saturday, Maui upended Baldwin 32-21 to put both of the Maui Interscholastic League’s contenders at 2-2 in the league. The Sabers’ victory, however, clinched the first-round championship due to the head-to-head victory. The two teams meet again Oct. 20 in a game that will have title implications.

In the Kauai Interscholastic Federation, Waimea threw a wrench into the proceedings with a 16-14 victory over Kauai High (3-2, 2-1 KIF) on Saturday, trimming the Red Raiders’ lead over Kapaa (3-1, 1-1) to a half-game. The win by the Menehunes (2-2, 1-2) put them just one full game out of first place. So … all three teams have a shot at the championship.

Last weekend’s Neighbor Islands scores and updated BIIF, KIF, MIL, BIIF 8-man and MIL 8-man standings follow.
