1950 prep football all-star teams

As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016.

Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here.

This time it is 1950, an innocent time when Charles Kaaihue and ‘Iolani ruled the ILH with a slew of legendary names and Waipahu was the boss in the OIA behind player of the year Jimmy Olivares.

The Honolulu Advertiser did not do ROIA all-stars and neither publication selected All-State teams yet.

There are plenty of recognizable names on here, including Gordon Chang, Joe Kaahaawai and Merv Lopes in the ILH and Gerald Welch, Irenio Ganigan and Famika Anae in the OIA.

Awesome! Nice job! Great to see/read about FB athletes of yesteryear. Thanks for printing the whole news article as I find the 2nd Team & even the honorable mention very interesting. There are some very familiar last names. The DNA runs deep till today. Hope to see you research more all star FB seasons.

I liked the ad for the Hawaii Utah football game. Reserved seats for $2.40 and general admission for $1.20. Utah won that game 40-28.
