For the second time in three years, ‘Iolani pulled out a miraculous last-minute win over Punahou in an ILH girls soccer contest on Tuesday at Punahou.
After a long throw-in that was played back out, ‘Iolani sophomore Marea Lee was on the receiving end of a Taylor Arakaki pass into the box and deflected the ball off of her head and shoulder that crossed the goal line for the win in the 80th minute.
The victory pushed ‘Iolani (7-1-1) ahead of Punahou into a first-place tie with Kamehameha (7-1-1). Both teams have two games left in the first round. If they tie, they will meet in a playoff for the first-round title and a state berth on Jan. 20.
Two years ago, Rachel Bowler scored on a free kick on the final play of the game to give the Raiders another 3-2 win.
‘Iolani had a four-year undefeated streak in the ILH regular season snapped earlier this season to Kamehameha. The Raiders have advanced to the state final in five of the last seven years — winning titles in 2013 and last year.
