The seniors on the Roosevelt boys swim team went out with a bang.
Of the 18 gold medals up for grabs at the OIA Swimming and Diving championships on Saturday, the Rough Riders won 16 of them to run away from the team title.
Joseph Ahia led the way with three gold medals and league records in each. He was joined by fellow seniors Jun Yueb Yoon (four golds), Jonathan Oba (four), Alex Croll (two), Shawn Saffery (one) and Jacob Erban (one). Sophomore Reimon Wada contributed two of the gold medals.
Kalani’s Dongjin Hwang was the only swimmer able to crack Roosevelt’s dominance, winning the 200 and 500 freestyle races and breaking his own record in the 500. He has won that race four years in a row and has collected 10 gold medals at the OIA championships in his career.
Ten gold medals is a haul, the only recent swimmer with more is Mililani’s Kevin Frifeldt with 11.
Yoon matched Hwang with his 10th gold medal on Saturday, while Oba finishes his career with eight and Ahia closes with six.
Wada already has four gold medals and has two years to collect more.
