After a long regular season, it’s time to work on penalty kicks.

The OIA girls soccer playoffs kick off with four matches on Monday, with the winners needing one more win to reach the state tournament and the losers calling it a season. The urgency of it all means ties are not an option.

There have been 18 ties in the OIA West this season with only eight in the East. Campbell, Aiea and Kapolei have all played three tied matches.

Defending OIA champion Mililani is the top seed in the West but doesn’t get much of a break, playing either Kaiser or Kapolei in the first round. Moanalua is tops in the East, trying to bring that division its first crown since 2012.

Pearl City’s much vaunted streak of state appearances since 1983 will be on the line on Tuesday against either Kahuku or Waialua. A win and the defending state champions are in, a loss would force them to play a win-or-go-home match.

Roosevelt is the Cinderella story of Division I, trying to reach the state tournament for the first time since 2009. The Rough Riders would have to beat Aiea to go into a date with Moanalua needing one win it their next two matches. Na Menehune closed out the regular season with a 4-1 win over the Rough Riders.

A school has not swept OIA and states since Mililani in 2002.
