Tiyana Hallums is on her way to Gonzaga.

Well, not just yet. Soon enough, though, the Kamehameha junior will fly to the Northwest, where the Bulldogs could use her skills anywhere on the court.

“This seems like the perfect fit. I don’t know what any other school can offer me to change my mind. They’ll let me play outside, which is completely rare since I’m a short outside,” said Hallums, who says she is “5-8 with shoes on.”

Hallums was a Star-Advertiser all-state Fab 15 selection last fall, a dynamic, explosive playmaker with the skill to play any position. Gonzaga was among a bunch that showed interest. The others included Auburn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Montana State, Utah and Washington State. It was GU, however, that offered the best financial package.

“I really wanted to make sure I was financially set so my family doesn’t have to worry about me,” she said. “Gonzaga is a great academic school and their volleyball program is on the rise. They committed to me for five years, a full ride.”

She’s already made plans for her major.

“I’m very excited for the nursing program. They’re branching off into an anesthesiology program,” Hallums said.

Her club team, Ka Ulu Koa, will travel this summer.

“We’re going to Minnesota to play in open division in the Junior Nationals,” she said.
