Pearl City’s Sunshine Fontes scored two goals for the U.S. U-17 women’s national team in a 4-1 win over Japan last Friday and then added another goal in a 2-0 victory over Japan on Sunday.
The games were among three played by the U.S. against Japan at the team’s training camp in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. The other contest ended in a 0-0 draw last Wednesday.
Fontes, a striker, was the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s player of the year in 2016 as a freshman and made the newspaper’s All-State first team in 2017. This year, she only played half the season for the Chargers in order to train with the national team.
According to the U.S. Soccer website, Fontes has 13 goals in 18 U-17 caps.
The team will play in the 2018 CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship in Managua, Nicaragua, in April. The U.S.’s pool games at the tournament are against Costa Rica, Bermuda and Canada on April 20, 22 and 24.
