State champions Waipuilani Estrella Beauchamp of Baldwin and Lahainaluna’s Nanea Estrella met at 132 pounds on Saturday at Maui High, with the Bear earning an important victory over one of the state’s most accomplished grapplers.

Estrella Beauchamp beat Estrella 9-2 in the first round of the round robin and a rematch was scrapped when Estrella forfeited.

The cousins met three times last year with Estrella winning each of them. They used the experience against each other to lead them both to state titles.

Estrella is No. 3 in the latest Hawaii Prep World pound-for-pound rankings and had a strong case to be ranked as high as No. 1. Estrella Beauchamp is No. 7.

Lahainaluna did come out with one important win over Baldwin, with No. 4 P4P Sami Saribay nipping Tianna Fernandez twice at 107, by scores of 5-2 and 5-0. Baldwin’s Jahnea Miguel, who lost to Estrella in a thriller at Paani and is ranked No. 5 P4P, pinned Tayler Peligrino Hayase in 4:07 at 145 pounds.

This was the last event for the varsity before the MIL championships on Feb. 9 at King Kekaulike.
