The Division I championship game of the Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships was postponed late Saturday night due to weather.

Baldwin and Hawaii Prep played to a scoreless tie through regulation and were in overtime when lightning in the area forced the game to be stopped. The weather did not let up and it was decided to postpone the game.

The teams have decided not to restart the game in the morning. Co-champions will be crowned in boys soccer for the first time in state tournament history.

The title will be Hawaii Prep’s third in a row after winning the Division II championship in 2016 and ’17.

Baldwin has its first boys soccer state title in school history. A Neighbor Islands team had never won a boys soccer state title in Division I until this year.

Technically, it now has two.

This is also the first time Baldwin has had team champions in girls and boys sports in the same season since 1999-2000, when the boys won swimming and the girls won soccer. The Baldwin girls took home a state wrestling title on Thursday.

According to an HHSAA press release, “championship trophies and medals will be shipped to both schools so that medal and trophy presentation can take place in front of their respective home-town supporters.”
