Ten girls wrestlers from Hawaii high schools finished the season ranked in the top 15 in the nation in their respective weight classes. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame released its final rankings for the year last week. It was a whirlwind senior year for Saint Louis’ Corey Cabanban. The four-time state championship wrestler who graduated with the school’s class of 2018 last week will be taking his craft and trying to improve on it in the nation’s heartland. Kaiser’s Tiare Ikei won a gold medal at the Pan-American Championships cadet wrestling tournament on Saturday in Guatemala City. Kaiser’s Tiare Ikei wrestled to a national title in Irving, Texas, last weekend. Ikei, who was representing Team Hawaii, won the 49-kilogram (approximately 108 pounds) division in the FILA Cadet Women’s Freestyle division at the 2018 United World Wrestling Women’s Nationals. Kamehameha’s Kysen Terukina beat a two-time state champion from Florida en route to a national wrestling championship last weekend in Virginia Beach, Va. Terukina is a two-time Hawaii state champion. In the 120-pound sophomore division final of the NHSCA High School Nationals, Terukina defeated Bretli Reyna of South Dade High (Homestead, Fla.) 6-3. Leilehua wrestling coach Kevin Corbett and assistant Corey Taniguchi have been named the 2018 coach and assistant coach of the year for Hawaii by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
