By Paul Honda on May 7, 2015

It’s not often that a sprinter takes the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dash titles at the ILH Track and Field Championships. Madison Moku did it all on Saturday, and the Hawaii Baptist Academy student-athlete is only a freshman. She is the daughter of former University of Hawaii football player Sam Moku, who also coached track and field at Kamehameha a few seasons ago.

By Stan Lee on May 2, 2015

Leilehua’s Jerri Malyuo won the girls long jump and triple jump. Her teammate Ky’Yonna Chapman repeated as 100 hurdles champion. Chapman was hesitant at taking up hurdling last year, thinking she might fall or her 5-foot-8 frame made her too short for the event. “I thought they were for tall people so I was just like ‘naw, I’m going to stick with running and relays,’” said Chapman, who won in 15.68. “But when I actually tried and I could see […]

The Defender: Kruse overcomes illness

By Paul Honda on May 2, 2015

It wasn’t a fun week for Kamehameha junior Kaeo Kruse. On Tuesday, he was diagnosed with a flu and respiratory infection. Three days before the ILH track and field championships — and one day before trials — the timing was absolutely not good. But he made it through the next few days. He was superb in the 1,500-meter run, logging four laps in 4 minutes, 2.88 seconds to edge Punahou’s super sophomore, Connor Lehl (4:03.13). After cooling down, Kruse wasn’t […]

Apo wins ILH title, looking higher

By Paul Honda on May 2, 2015

Cassidy Apo had victory wrapped up at the ILH Championships on Saturday at Kunuiakea Stadium. The Kamehameha senior had already cleared 5 feet to secure first place. Then she went straight for a potential personal record. “I went straight to 5-4,” Apo said, noting that the lack of wind was a stark contrast to the trials on Wednesday. “It can help, but it depends on which way the wind is blowing.” Her first two tries at 5-4 failed, but then […]

Kane healing, biding his time

By Paul Honda on May 2, 2015

Dylan Kane has all the potential to make his dreams come true. A year ago, as a junior, the lanky 6-foot-3 sprinter zoomed to victories in the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the Island Moving/HHHSAA State Track and Field Championships on his home turf: Kamehameha’s Kunuiakea Stadium. Then came football season and his eventual commitment to the University of Oregon, who he signed with on Feb. 5. As of Saturday, Kane virtually ceded the ILH championships in his two core […]
