Girls Soccer: Kalani girls start strong

Kylie Kimura and Tori Chinen each had hat tricks and the Kalani girls soccer team opened its season with a 12-0 win over Kaimuki. Daysha-Ann Solidum and Nicole Nakamura added two goals each while Stephanie Chung and Samantha Churchill scored once apiece. It was the usual suspects on the first day of OIA girls soccer on Friday night. League champion Pearl City shut out Waianae, while the rest of last year’s top contenders won. Campbell shut out Waipahu 5-0 behind goals from five different girls and Mililani scored six — Two by Tia Furuta — in a 6-0 shutout of Leilehua. King Kekaulike upsets ‘Iolani

King Kekaulike upset defending state champion ‘Iolani 1-0 in the boys semifinals of the 43rd annual Ka Makani Soccer Classic on Saturday at Hawaii Preparatory Academy. Na Alii move on to play Punahou in the final on Sunday. The Buffanblu got past Mid-Pacific 1-0 in the other semifinal match, which was decided on penalty kicks. In the girls semifinals, King Kekaulike stopped MPI 2-0, and Waiakea defeated Hawaii Prep 2-0. Na Alii and the Warriors meet in the final today.

Christian Liberty started the first Division II semifinal on fire, earning a penalty kick after just 4 1/2 minutes. Louis Moylan converted it for his third goal of the tournament. Honokaa responded with a goal from Preston Branco at 21:23. Honokaa currently holds a 10-3 advantage in shots with about 10 minutes left in the first half. Larry Tuileta, Punahou’s All-State quarterback, spurned Hawaii and signed with USC this morning at PIAA’s Letter-of-Intent signing ceremony at the Sheraton Waikiki.
