HHSAA handbook spells out pairing procedures

By Nick Abramo on February 23, 2015

This does not make for exciting reading, but it does explain why the HHSAA seeds teams the way it does for tournaments. In the recent girls soccer tournament, and now, for the released pairings of the upcoming boys basketball tournament, there seemed to be some oddities, leaving people wondering if there was some fiddling going on. Copies of the seeding/pairings procedures are available in a coaches information packet given to school representatives at the tournament’s coaches meetings. The coaches information […]

Isobe at epicenter of Mililani’s state-title run

By Nick Abramo on February 22, 2015

At Mililani’s lowest point of the season, coach Ray Akiona referred the media to junior fullback Kasey Isobe. Little did Akiona know that Isobe would be the one who delivered his team to its zenith by scoring the winning goal in Saturday’s 1-0 double-overtime state championship victory over previously undefeated ‘Iolani at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Trojans’ amazing run to the state title might not have been possible had it not been for a loss in a huge […]

Tolleson makes big stops in Konawaena’s loss

By Nick Abramo on February 20, 2015

Taiana Tolleson isn’t a big name in state soccer circles, but it could happen eventually. The Konawaena goalkeeper made nine saves, including several spectacular ones, in a 2-1 loss to Mililani in the Division I girls soccer state tournament semifinals Friday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Thanks to Tolleson and the Wildcats defense in front of her, the Big Island champion and fourth-seeded Wildcats were in the game until the very end against the OIA powerhouse Trojans. One save […]

State’s best: ‘Iolani, Mililani play for title

By Nick Abramo on February 20, 2015

The two best girls soccer teams in the state made it through to the state final with wins Friday night, so if you haven’t attended a match this year, you will want to go to Saturday’s ‘Iolani vs. Mililani showdown. It’s at 7 p.m. at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Raiders haven’t lost all year long, but because of three ties in the ILH, they finished behind one-loss Punahou in the standings and were not seeded for the states. As […]

Waialua girls soccer boom just beginning

By Nick Abramo on February 20, 2015

To say the Waialua girls soccer program is on the upswing would be an understatement. The Bulldogs are thriving. After going 0-10 a year ago, the Bulldogs started 0-6 this season, but came on strong to finish as OIA Division II champions and a spot in the state tournament. A 6-0 loss to Pac-Five in the quarterfinals of the Division II state tourney Thursday didn’t dampen Waialua’s season one bit. “As a coach, I have nothing to complain about,” Bulldogs […]

Soccer Saga, Episode 4: Punahou’s fruitful circle

By Nick Abramo on February 17, 2015

This postgame huddle had meaning. Actually, it was a postseason huddle. ILH champion Punahou had just fallen victim to a Mililani comeback in the girls soccer state tournament quarterfinals on Saturday, and the Buffanblu, after the handshake line, got together in a circle. The season was over, so it was time for the players, coaches and managers to say goodbye for now. One of the first things coach Starr Johnson said after the final whistle and before the huddle was: […]
