‘Iolani tops HPA; shows appetite for more

By Nick Abramo on February 7, 2019

‘Iolani delivered an impressive knockout of defending co-champion and top-seeded Hawaii Prep 2-1 on Thursday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. But there is much more to be done if the Raiders (12-2-1) want to return to the top of the Division I heap in The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships. ‘Iolani has nine D-I state titles under its belt, but the last one came five years ago. Standing in the way are three highly talented teams — […]

By Billy Hull on February 4, 2019

Three different ‘Iolani players scored in the first 18 minutes to lead the host Raiders to a 4-0 win over Kaiser in the opening round of the Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships this afternoon. Lincoln Oishi added a second goal in the 48th minute and Jacob Lee and Brendan Parke also netted goals for ‘Iolani (11-2-1), which is in the quarterfinals for the third straight year. The Raiders will play defending co-state champion and No. 1 seed Hawaii […]

Kamehameha survives frantic ending for title

By Nick Abramo on February 2, 2019

A 1-0 lead in soccer can be precarious, and it was very much so Saturday night. Kamehameha wound up holding off a Campbell offensive flurry over the last 15 minutes for a 1-0 victory in the Division I final of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The upstart Sabers (12-5-1) came oh-so close to tying it up and sending it to overtime. Cheyenne Mattos‘ 35-yard direct kick early in the second half had […]

Malia Brost fuels Hawaii Prep’s sixth state title

By Nick Abramo on February 2, 2019

Soccer fans on the Big Island already knew what Malia Brost could do. That’s why they were yelling, “Curve it, curve it in,” when Brost lined up for a free kick in the first half at an extremely bad angle. Brost placed the ball about five yards from the end line and about 10 yards from the flag in the deep right corner. Sure enough, she did what the fans were calling for. She left-footed a bender into the top […]

Crisp Kamehameha accelerates into state final

By Nick Abramo on February 1, 2019

Coach Missy Moore has been here before. Her Kamehameha Warriors of 2019 have not. We’re talking about the Division I final of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships. It’s Saturday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Warriors got there by dispatching fourth-seeded and MIL champion King Kekaulike with a convincing 6-0 semifinal victory Friday night. One more win, on Saturday against an upstart Campbell squad, will give ILH champion and top-seeded Kamehameha its ninth state championship […]

Campbell girls inch closer to soccer history

By Nick Abramo on February 1, 2019

Campbell can make soccer history with one more win. The Sabers defeated Konawaena 3-0 in the Division I semifinals of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships on Friday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. One more test awaits for the unseeded Sabers — against ILH champion and top-seeded Kamehameha — on Saturday night. It will be Campbell’s first appearance in a state title game. The Sabers have had some success at the league level, winning the OIA D-I […]

Maya Hagiwara’s 3 goals pushes Kamehameha into semis

By Nick Abramo on January 31, 2019

Maya Hagiwara had a night to remember Thursday. Normally an attacking midfielder, Hagiwara was moved to center forward and netted three second-half goals to lead Kamehameha to a 3-0 victory over Mililani in the Division I quarterfinals of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Neither team budged in the first half. In the second, the ILH champion and top-seeded Warriors (11-2) took control. Hagiwara’s first goal, the game-winner, came on a rebound of […]

Blas leads Konawaena to seismic upset of ‘Iolani

By Nick Abramo on January 31, 2019

Konawaena pulled off a seismic upset of ‘Iolani in the Division I quarterfinals of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships on Thursday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Wildcats survived, 2-1, after regulation and two overtimes, thanks to a 5-4 advantage on penalty kicks to vanquish the two-time defending champion Raiders. Kyanah Blas‘ fingertip save of Sasha Asselbaye‘s hard shot in the second overtime kept her team in it, and then Blas made a big stop on […]
