By Paul Honda on August 15, 2020

There has been enough bad news in the young life of Anthony Sagapolutele, but the Saint Louis senior refuses to back down. Even in the morbid punchline of a year the 2020 has become, the talented defensive tackle is savoring every bit of good news. The 6-foot, 260-pound playmaker received his first Division I (FCS) football scholarship on Thursday from Valparaiso. “I’ve been told, I’ve been doubted about playing D-I. Just to be able to see that there’s a D-I […]

There is no perfection in the earthly domain of football, but Rob Crowell is seeing something close to it with the Saint Louis offensive line. By Paul Honda on August 11, 2020

For months, the path to success at Syracuse appeared to veer through the Hawaiian Islands. That observation rang truer still after the Orange recently offered a football scholarship to Saint Louis offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea, who just completed his sophomore season. The 6-foot-4, 345-pound right guard also has offers from Hawaii, UNLV and Arizona State. “(Offensive line coach) Kevin Mawae of ASU and Cav (Mike Cavanaugh of Syracuse) reached out a few times,” Crusaders OL coach Rob Crowell said. “Because […]

Syracuse, with former Hawaii assistant coach Mike Cavanaugh leading the O-line, came knocking. By then, “Cav” and Ellis were texting daily. Though UCLA, Virginia and San Diego State entered the picture with offers later, Ellis never lost touch with Syracuse. He committed to the Orange on Thursday, capping a five-month odyssey […]

Saturday morning grind: Crusaders among early birds training on sand

By Paul Honda on July 13, 2020

Two hours of non-stop running and hurdling in the sand is exactly what some of the most dedicated student-athletes in the state want on Saturday mornings. Three of them, Saint Louis football players Tasi Tadio, Iona Purcell and Prince Solomon, barely broke a sweat despite the constant footwork and 20- to 40-yard sprints at Ala Moana Beach Park at 7 a.m. The training is coordinated by Liahona Youth Empowerment. Approximately 50 athletes worked out, including a few from the Hawaii […]

Athletic directors in the Oahu Interscholastic Association have not received official word about a change in the fall sports start date. According to Ian Scheuring of Hawaii News Now, however, the date is Aug. 19. Scheuring’s tweet on Thursday afternoon caught administrators off guard.
