LIVE BLOG: Pac-Five 26, St. Francis 21

By Paul Honda on August 29, 2014

Traffic this afternoon — I left town around 1:30 p.m. — was smooth, effortless. Beautiful. From my vantage point here at the stadium, it looks like it’s moving nicely in both directions. (It had been jammed up in the other direction from the West side due to a car accident.) I’ve been looking forward to both of these ILH league-opening games for awhile. St. Francis is 2-0. The Saints are unbeaten! They have decisive wins over Keaau and Holy Trinity […]

Nation’s best? St. John Bosco looked the part

By Paul Honda on August 23, 2014

It was impossible, really, to watch the high-efficiency offense and technically sound defense of St. John Bosco on Saturday and not have this thought: Dynasty. Dynasty as the state champion of California in 2013. Dynasty as the No. 1 team in the MaxPreps rankings in ’13. Not so long ago, it was Saint Louis of Hawaii that had that kind of machinery, a team so well-tuned, well coached and uber-talented that it won 14 Prep Bowl titles and one state […]

LIVE BLOG: St. John Bosco 63, Saint Louis 14

By Paul Honda on August 22, 2014

5:52 p.m. It’s more than 90 minutes to kickoff here at Aloha Stadium. Everything is kicking off later than it did last year, exhibition games between intrastate powerhouses included. St. John Bosco finished No. 1 in the MaxPreps national rankings last year. It’s like this: very, very rarely does a mainland football team come to Hawaii — and play in Aloha Stadium — unless it has a stacked-to-the-max roster. Remember De La Salle some years back? They had a pretty […]

St. John Bosco, Saint Louis set for clash

By Nick Abramo on August 21, 2014

“Remarkable” and “amazing” are two words St. John Bosco coach Jason Negro used to describe his impressions of Hawaii. The highly acclaimed football team is staying and practicing at Turtle Bay Resort in preparation for Friday’s 7:30 p.m. game at Aloha Stadium against state power St. Louis. If the cards fall just right, maybe “remarkable” and “amazing” will be the words fans use after the contest. The Braves, from Bellflower, Calif., are the reigning California open division champions and finished […]

Video: #3 Saint Louis at #2 Mililani

By Paul Honda on August 20, 2014

Extended version Key plays from the Saint Louis-Mililani nonconference game on Saturday at John Kauinana Stadium. With Week 1’s games cancelled due to Hurricane Iselle, this marked the return of coach Cal Lee and offensive coordinator Ron Lee to the Crusaders. Mililani stole the show, though. Quarterback McKenzie Milton passed for 369 yards and four touchdowns, and ran for 204 yards and three more TDs. The Trojans prevailed 63-47.

Can Mililani keep this offensive pace all year?

By Paul Honda on August 17, 2014

You’d have to play Madden or NCAA 14, load up your lineup with All-Pros (or All-Americans) and go no-huddle (sometimes hurry up) all game long to rack up crazy numbers like this. Yes, the scoreboard at John Kauinana Stadium binged and banged like a pinball machine on Saturday night. For both Mililani and Saint Louis. Keeping stats would’ve been much simpler if the UH statistics crew (with all their fancy machinery) would’ve been there. Instead, it was left to this […]

LIVE BLOG: Saint Louis at Mililani

By Paul Honda on August 16, 2014

5:30 p.m. JV game is entering the fourth quarter. Saint Louis leads Mililani 18-14. It’s a beautiful, sunny, breezy afternoon at John Kauinana Stadium. The kind of day that makes me feel grateful to be alive and enjoying another great high school game. Still thinking about Kapolei and the loss of a player’s dad at the Kahuku game last night. My thoughts and prayers are with the young man, his family and the Hurricane ohana. The varsity game here is […]
