USC the latest to chase Tagovailoa

By Paul Honda on December 9, 2014

Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was extremely elusive as a sophomore. USC is the fourth university hoping to corral the 6-foot-1, 190-pound southpaw. Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance announced the news this morning. Tagovailoa also has offers from UCLA, Texas Tech and Hawaii. He passed for 2,571 yards and 33 touchdowns in just 10 games. He threw only three interceptions. He completed 69.1 percent of his attempts (163-for-236), averaging a whopping 10.9 yards per attempt. He finished with a passer rating […]

Feeling green: Ulu-Perry enjoys trip to Oregon

By Paul Honda on November 24, 2014

Fred Ulu-Perry had a dominant season as Saint Louis’ left tackle. He also carried the comfort of bleeding his team’s navy blue and red, and UCLA’s powder blue and gold. He orally committed to the Bruins early in the season and never wavered. He is, however, still going on official visits, and it doesn’t get much more impressive than a trip to Eugene, Ore. Ulu-Perry visited the campus and took in the sights. He met up with Oregon quarterback and […]

Tagovailoa’s third offer: Hawaii

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2014

Saint Louis’ football season has been over for a few weeks, but the action never ends for some of its standout players. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa received a scholarship offer this week — this third — and this one is from the University of Hawaii, according to Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance. UCLA was the first to offer the 6-foot-1, 190-pound sophomore. Then came Texas Tech, which operates the four-wide, run-and-shoot under coach Kliff Kingsbury. The southpaw passed for 2,571 yards and […]

Crusaders assistant: ‘We just beat ourselves’

By Nick Abramo on October 30, 2014

It was an odd moment, and it is one you can bet will be remembered for a long time by the Saint Louis coaching staff. The Crusaders were in a 28-28 ballgame with top-ranked Punahou in the ILH playoffs last Friday and they had the momentum. The Buffanblu were about to punt the ball away on a fourth-and-two situation, and Saint Louis’ punt-return team stepped on the field. It took a while for Punahou to snap the ball and it […]

Punahou moves on, Saint Louis looks ahead

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 25, 2014

Punahou’s starters hadn’t seen the field much in the fourth quarter over the Buffanblu’s first six wins this season. Their efficiency routinely powered the Buffanblu to comfortable leads by halftime as Punahou swept through the ILH first-round schedule with relative ease, starting with a 55-7 win over Saint Louis in the league opener on Aug. 29. Friday’s rematch with the Crusaders bore little resemblance to that first meeting and Punahou survived a four-quarter shootout to retain the ILH title. The […]

VIDEO: #3 Saint Louis vs. #1 Punahou (playoff)

By Paul Honda on October 25, 2014

INSTANT CLASSIC. Saint Louis needed a win over regular-season (first round) winner Punahou to force a championship game. The Crusaders led 13-0, but the Buffanblu rallied for a 35-28 victory, capturing the ILH Division I football title.

Up the end zone tunnel … and on to UCLA

By Nick Abramo on October 25, 2014

About two hours ago, Fred Ulu-Perry Jr. walked off the Aloha Stadium turf and up the north end zone tunnel for the last time as a high school football player. Just before he stepped into the tunnel, his past became his future, like Dorothy opening the door to her colorful new world in the Wizard of Oz. Ulu-Perry will be going to UCLA on a football scholarship this fall and right there to greet him with a hug and a […]

TRENCH WARFARE: Uluave vs. Evaimalo

By Billy Hull on October 24, 2014

Punahou senior Semisi Uluave has been a big-time recruiting prospect since way back to his sophomore season. The 6-foot-5, 320-pounder is considered a guard at the next level and says UCLA is his top school right now, but is still looking at both Texas Tech and Oregon. Punahou needs a win over Saint Louis tonight to claim its fourth consecutive ILH Division I championship. In this episode of Trench Warfare, Uluave will match up against Crusaders defensive lineman Tanielu Evaimalo. […]
