WHWL: Saint Louis almost ‘special’

By Paul Honda on August 25, 2015

What Have We Learned: Saint Louis can play a Grade A game, but until the loose ends are tied up, there is no complacency. Oh, this isn’t about anything particularly unusual for any good high school football team. Most of the elite teams near and far have their strengths and a few weaknesses. But Coach Cal Lee was beyond annoyed after his team’s latest win, technically the first official game of the season after several highly-competitive scrimmages. Moments after his […]

By Paul Honda on August 21, 2015

It’s only 5:10 p.m., more than two hours from kickoff, but the Faga‘itua Vikings are already on the turf here at Aloha Stadium. No helmets or pads yet. The Faga‘itua Vikings’ voyage began with hard work and sweat back home. “We thank all our families and our community back home,” Coach Suaese “Pooch” Ta‘ase said. “We had to raise $125,000 to get here. We did every kind of fundraising there is. […]

By Nick Abramo on August 13, 2015

Unlike its two previous high school football encounters in Hawaii this season, Fagaitua, the champions from American Samoa, will play in a real game for the third one. Saint Louis athletic director Wade Okamura confirmed on Thursday that the Aug. 21 nonleague game between Saint Louis and Fagaitua at Aloha Stadium has been sanctioned by the National Federation of High School Associations and the Hawaii High School Athletic Association. It will be the official season opener for both teams. Fagaitua […]

Cal Lee, Rod York debriefed after scrimmage

By Nick Abramo on August 12, 2015

It was just an initial, relatively insignificant skirmish in what could be the beginning of the road to the real war. We’re talking about Cal Lee’s Saint Louis Crusaders against Rod York’s Mililani Trojans. The battle lines have been drawn, but there is no assurance that either of these two teams will hold up in the long run of very difficult schedules. But — as the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 media poll voters have told us the last two weeks — Mililani […]
