June Jones watched Saint Louis’ semifinal win

By Nick Abramo on November 14, 2015

June Jones was in the house Friday night, and it’s possible he might be in that house a lot more next football season. Jones, the highly successful football coach at the University of Hawaii from 1999 to 2007, was on the sideline not far from the Saint Louis bench during the Crusaders’ 56-30 victory over Mililani in the Division I state semifinals. He appeared to be enjoying himself, talking to many well-wishers and saying hello to people he hasn’t seen […]

Final Four: What Have We Learned?

By Paul Honda on November 14, 2015

This dang rain hasn’t stopped. It stalls though. It holds up every now and then. But tonight? It hasn’t really stopped. At times, the wet stuff fell from the Halawa sky relentlessly. Not enough to create huge puddles right away. Just wet enough to make any receiver think twice about fundamentals. And more than moisture, there was wind. It was constant from the mauka end zone to the makai, especially early in the day when Waianae and Kahuku played. By […]

Saint Louis’ D was last stop on road for Mililani

By Nick Abramo on November 13, 2015

Mililani’s reign as Division I football state champion is over. What was supposed to be a shootout at Aloha Stadium against the top-ranked Saint Louis Crusaders ended up being a one-sided affair. Sure, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Saint Louis’ offense had its way, but don’t discount the contribution by the defense in the Crusaders’ 56-30 victory in the Division I semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. On the defensive side of the ball, the Crusaders (9-1) were […]

By Billy Hull on November 13, 2015

As Bruce Buffer would say, “IIIIIIIIITT’SSSSS TIIIIMMMEEEEE.” The defending state champion Mililani Trojans and the reigning ILH champion Saint Louis Crusaders will play with the winner facing undefeated Kahuku next Friday night in the D-I title game of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships. Tons of storylines to watch here. Obviously, the Mililani threesome of McKenzie Milton, Vavae Malepeai and Kalakaua Timoteo will fight to play one more game. Malepeai begins the night 137 yards behind Joe Igber for […]

ILH, HHSAA abide by head ref’s evaluation

By Paul Honda on November 13, 2015

With a key defensive player for Saint Louis, linebacker Jordan Loveni Iosefa, out of action tonight due to a two-game suspension, there are questions galore. Saint Louis, which meets Mililani in the 7:30 p.m. semifinal game in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships at Aloha Stadium, had hoped for Iosefa to be eligible. He had already sat out one game, the ILH championship tilt against Punahou. But according to those who attended the ILH coaches meeting last week, the […]

Saint Louis’ Iosefa to sit against Mililani

By Paul Honda on November 13, 2015

Saint Louis will not have the services of standout linebacker Jordan Loveni Iosefa on Friday against Mililani in the semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. The Crusaders entered the week expecting to have Iosefa back after he was suspended late in the ILH regular season. He was ejected in a second-round matchup with Punahou, then sat out the championship game against the same Punahou team. Saint Louis won that game to take the ILH title and qualify […]

Don’t forget the defenses

By Paul Honda on November 13, 2015

For all of the star power on offense in the Mililani-Saint Louis clash, the biggest question, maybe, is how both defenses will react to two potent offenses. Saint Louis’ much improved defense has two rangy, physical linebackers in Jordan Loveni Iosefa, a USC commit, and Isaac Slade-Matautia. The two playmakers bring enough heat that Saint Louis often may not need to put more than five in the box, maybe six against Mililani’s four-wide, shotgun look. But probably not seven (no […]
