The time for talk is over. No. 1 Saint Louis and No. 2 Kahuku take the field tonight at 7:30 p.m. to determine the Division I champion of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. Saint Louis is looking for its first title since 2010 while the Red Raiders haven’t won since repeating in 2011 and ’12. Kahuku is 22-5 all-time in the state tournament while Saint Louis is 17-5. The Red Raiders’ seven state titles are the most in […]

It could all come down to this

By Jerry Campany on November 20, 2015

Marcus Mariota made Hawaii one of the hotbeds for college quarterbacks, and Kaimi Fairbairn might have done the same for the kicking game. Fairbairn, a former Punahou kicker who is breaking records at UCLA, got his first taste of the big game in the 2011 title tilt. Now, it is Kekoa Sasaoka‘s turn. The Kahuku booter might be the biggest offensive weapon for the Red Raiders this season, controlling field position with his soaring punts and turning every trip inside […]

Brotherhood and a dream at Kalaepohaku

By Paul Honda on November 18, 2015

Cal Lee doesn’t have a lot of quick answers, if any, about many of the things that teenagers care about. Favorite movie? Pause. “I just don’t have the time for that,” he explains. Favorite TV show? Pause. “You know how old I am? I gotta think way back,” Lee said before practice on Wednesday afternoon. “These are tough ones. Like taking the SAT. I like Family Feud.” For many of the Crusaders, there is no off-field hobby. There is schoolwork. […]

The game before the game: Kahuku/Saint Louis

By Jerry Campany on November 18, 2015

With the First Hawaiian Bank / HHSAA state football championships coming up on Friday, let’s play a little bit of extreme fantasy football. The difference in this, however, is that is is completely and utterly subjective from the beginning to the end. The big game got us to thinking, what would a matchup of all-time teams for Kahuku and Saint Louis look like? What if they all gathered together in their prime, took over the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park and […]

Kahuku, Saint Louis renew the rivalry

By Billy Hull on November 18, 2015

Saint Louis’ historic run of Prep Bowl titles ended only because of a format change. The Crusaders had won their 13th consecutive Prep Bowl in 1998, sliding past Kahuku, 28-20. A year later, the first Hawaii high school state tournament was put together by the HHSAA and featured eight teams. It didn’t slow Saint Louis down as the Crusaders won the first official “state championship” shutting out the Red Raiders in the final, 19-0. From then on, things quickly began […]

Trojans’ Malepeai wishes finalists ‘the best’

By Nick Abramo on November 17, 2015

Mililani’s Vavae Malepeai etched his name into the Hawaii high school history books with his rushing exploits for the Trojans the past three falls. Malepeai, who broke Joe Igber of ‘Iolani’s all-time rushing record in last week’s Division I state semifinal loss to Saint Louis (4,549 to 4,428), has lots of friends and relatives on both teams in the No. 2 Kahuku (12-0) vs. top-ranked Crusaders (9-1) championship game Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. Malepeai is not rooting […]

Saint Louis jumps to No. 36 in national poll

By Nick Abramo on November 16, 2015

Saint Louis rose 69 spots to No. 36 in the latest MaxPreps national computer rankings released Sunday. The Crusaders (9-1) are coming off a 56-30 victory over Mililani in the Division I state semifinals. They’ll play Kahuku (12-0), which dropped 54 spots nationally after last weekend’s 13-0 win over Waianae in the other D-I semifinal, on Friday in the state title game at Aloha Stadium. In addition, Saint Louis is ranked No. 8 in the Pacific region by USA Today. […]
