Lee: ‘We can’t just live on tonight’s win’

By Paul Honda on August 6, 2017

One game into the 2017 football season, Cal Lee isn’t losing an iota of competitive edge. If anything, the Saint Louis football coach is as hungry as ever to build the Crusaders into a championship team for the second time in as many seasons. A 49-7 win at No. 5 Waianae on Saturday night did little to soften his long-range goals for the top-ranked Crusaders. “I like what I saw, but I think we can get better. We can’t just […]

No. 1 Saint Louis starts with tough task

By Jerry Campany on August 5, 2017

When Cal Lee returned to Saint Louis a few years ago, part of the reason was to bring back a taste of the old days. The ways don’t get much older than a season opener in Waianae. From 1967 to 1975, Saint Louis began each season except one (1972) against Larry Ginoza‘s Waianae Seariders. Ron Marciel‘s squad made the trip to the West side in alternating years, making it the only visiting field his boys would play on throughout the […]

PREP FOOTBALL COUNTDOWN: No. 1 Saint Louis

By Nick Abramo on August 3, 2017

Cal Lee was in a joking mood when told that he has never repeated for a state championship, and so he good-naturedly laughed it off. Technically, it’s true. The Saint Louis football coach won 14 Prep Bowl championships, including 13 in a row. He also has won two state championships, but those are 17 years apart. He earned the first one in the inaugural state championship season of 1999 and again in 2016. Voters have picked the Crusaders to repeat […]

Saint Louis and Campbell bang heads [+video]

By Nick Abramo on July 27, 2017

Near the end of Thursday’s football scrimmage on the Saint Louis campus, coaches Cal Lee of the Crusaders and Campbell’s Darren Johnson greeted one another jovially behind the line of scrimmage. Seeing the two ol’ deep-rooted veterans of football wars shaking hands was a sure sign that the long-awaited high school season is here. And the best joke of the day was at Johnson’s expense. One of the assistant coaches came over to Johnson when the scrimmage was done and […]
