Saint Louis prepared for Saturday’s main event

By Nick Abramo on November 17, 2017

Friends and family gathered around the Saint Louis football players after practice Thursday at the school’s campus. It was a picture-taking moment. Brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, girlfriends, grandfathers. A big gathering. It was an important moment. The season is almost over. Another important moment comes Saturday, when the Crusaders (9-0) put their 14-game winning streak on the line in the Open Division state championship. It comes, as usual, against Kahuku (11-1). It’s the third year in a row the two […]

Q&A: Saint Louis offensive coordinator Ron Lee

By Paul Honda on November 15, 2017

The 1979 Kaiser Cougars rolled and rolled all the way to the Oahu Prep Bowl, where then-head coach Ron Lee led them to a 27-7 victory over Kamehameha. In the years that passed, he continued working at a hotel while assistant coaching at Saint Louis (with brother and head coach Cal Lee), then the University of Hawaii, Kalani and finally back at Saint Louis. He remains the offensive coordinator, one of the original run-and-shoot gurus, here and elsewhere. Times change, […]

By Paul Honda on November 14, 2017

He doesn’t lack for confidence, but Mitchell Quinn also doesn’t lack for diligence. Working. Working. Working. The Saint Louis senior is always grinding, always getting that edge. The payoff has been substantial. His eight-catch, 307-yard performance on Friday in a comeback win over Mililani is the latest explosion by the former reserve wide receiver. During the game, he received a scholarship offer from Hawaii. The win, the offer, those capped a memorable week. A few days before the game, the […]

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2017

Just a few hours after Saint Louis’ 47-23 comeback victory over Mililani in the Division I-Open semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships, wide receiver Mitchell Quinn had some news to share. Quinn, who caught eight passes for a state-tournament record 307 yards and five touchdowns, announced that he has received his first college scholarship offer: Hawaii. The story that passed through the press box after the game at Aloha Stadium is that UH passing-game coordinator and wide […]

Kahuku, Saint Louis advance to another showdown

By Nick Abramo on November 11, 2017

One player was just trying to circle around and get open. His opponent was trying to defend the run before switching gears to defend the pass. It was during one of two highly entertaining games of state Division I-Open semifinal football Friday night at Aloha Stadium, and the outcome of this one, the opener, was hanging in the balance as another player, Kahuku quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava, scrambled around. Maiava saw receiver Duke Heffernan alone in the middle of the end […]
