By Billy Hull on November 20, 2017

The MaxPreps Xcellent 25, which is the poll that uses human votes for its rankings, moved the Crusaders up a spot to No. 20 this week. Saint Louis became the second […]

Tufaga burns hometown team once again

By Christian Shimabuku on November 19, 2017

For the second year in a row, Saint Louis safety Isaiah Tufaga made a game-changing play against his hometown team on the biggest stage possible. In Saturday night’s 31-28 victory over Kahuku in the Open Division final of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships, the Laie native intercepted Red Raiders’ quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava for a 40-yard touchdown that gave the Crusaders a 24-7 lead with 5:30 remaining in the third quarter. “Shoutout to my teammates for doing what they […]

Cordeiro blazes own trail to perfection

By Billy Hull on November 19, 2017

For two years, Chevan Cordeiro was relegated to backup duty. A player of his talent and caliber, Cordeiro could have easily found playing time somewhere else. Yet he stayed at Saint Louis backing up Tua Tagovailoa and patiently waited for his turn. It came in 2017, and the 6-foot-1, 175-pound University of Hawaii commit delivered a season every bit as good as that of his former teammate, who is now at Alabama. Cordeiro delivered a fifth state championship to the […]

Saint Louis’ title victory over Kahuku: crazy good

By Nick Abramo on November 19, 2017

The appetizer was so very good that it seemed quite possible the main course would turn out bland. But instead, the third game of Saturday’s tripleheader at Aloha Stadium was a crazy-good show-stopper for football connoisseurs and an incredible capper for Hawaii’s football-hungry fans, who got an extra-sweet treat in the first game of the day — Lahainaluna’s 75-69 seven-overtime win over Konawaena in the D-II championship game. With a kickoff at 9:58 p.m. Saturday, and the final play happening […]

By Hawaii Prep World on November 18, 2017

For the third year in a row, the high school football season will end with a clash between the two most storied prep football programs in the state. No. 1 Saint Louis (9-0) and its 14 Prep Bowls and four state titles faces No. 2 Kahuku (11-1), which has won eight state championships. Kahuku dominated the Crusaders, 39-14, in 2015 before Saint Louis came back to win last season’s showdown, 30-14. Looks like we will start at 9:55 p.m. Saint […]

Kahuku pregame posture: cool confidence

By Nick Abramo on November 17, 2017

Things were pretty relaxed before Kahuku football practice Friday afternoon. But don’t let that lack of intense emotion fool you. Behind the smiles and easy talk from the leaders on the field is an inner mechanism just waiting to go off into a controlled rage on cue tomorrow. Perhaps it will be timed to set off when the sea of red fans at Aloha Stadium do their first tomahawk chop or when the players gather for a haka, if they […]

Q&A: Saint Louis coach Cal Lee on Kahuku

By Paul Honda on November 17, 2017

Two days before the big day, Cal Lee is in a good place. Focused. Relaxed. Details, details, details. After 14 Oahu Prep Bowl titles, two state championship crowns, coaching at the University of Hawaii, a stint as AFL2 Hawaiian Islanders coach, and contributing to Kalani’s ascent out of the doldrums, he is back home. Defending titles, that’s something that is never easier than winning them. But Saint Louis is in position to win a second Open Division crown in a […]
