Punahou 17th in MaxPreps Freeman rankings

By Paul Honda on September 16, 2014

The Punahou Buffanblu (3-0) are at No. 17 in the MaxPreps Freeman rankings released today. Punahou was at No. 15 last week. Mililani (5-0) downed Aiea 56-14, but dropped three notches to No. 129 in the formula-based rankings. Kamehameha (3-0) is at No. 211, dropping 30 spots despite a 33-6 win over Damien. Kahuku (4-0) is at No. 531, moving up 117 places after a 56-10 win over Castle. Farrington (5-0) slipped 53 spots to No. 550.

Punahou does it with defense, too

By Nick Abramo on September 10, 2014

Offensively, the Punahou football team is so efficient that it’s quite possible for the average fan to overlook the Buffanblu’s defense. Opponents ignoring their rock-solid unit would be making a serious mistake. The biggest testament to their fortitude is that they only gave up a touchdown to Saint Louis’ potent run-and-shoot offense, the same offense that put up 47 points a few weeks earlier in a loss to Mililani, last year’s state Division I runner-up. Alas, top-ranked Punahou (2-0, 2-0 […]

Punahou: Must be seen to be believed

By Paul Honda on August 29, 2014

I‘ve seen Mililani and came away impressed, wowed enough to change my ballot and place the Trojans atop my list at No. 1. Sure, Punahou is defending champion and deserves to be at the top until they prove otherwise, right? Well… I’ve seen Punahou now. I’m changing my vote back to the Puns. (Don’t e-mail me about bad nicknames. The school’s publications use “Puns” and I’m about to refer to the team multiple times, so please…) I just saw a […]

LIVE BLOG: Punahou 55, Saint Louis 7

By Paul Honda on August 29, 2014

First quarter Ephraim Tuliloa finds Kanawai Noa in single coverage deep for a 45-yard bomb. That’s the kind of big-play action I remember from the Punahou-Farrington scrimmage weeks ago. Buffanblu 7, Crusaders 0, 3:11. Second quarter Saint Louis had a nice drive going, getting to the PUN 7-yard line, but fumbled on a run play. Three plays later, Tuliloa launched a 43-yard bomb to Noa for another touchdown. Not sure why they’re trying to cover Noa with just one defender, […]

LIVE BLOG: Pac-Five 26, St. Francis 21

By Paul Honda on August 29, 2014

Traffic this afternoon — I left town around 1:30 p.m. — was smooth, effortless. Beautiful. From my vantage point here at the stadium, it looks like it’s moving nicely in both directions. (It had been jammed up in the other direction from the West side due to a car accident.) I’ve been looking forward to both of these ILH league-opening games for awhile. St. Francis is 2-0. The Saints are unbeaten! They have decisive wins over Keaau and Holy Trinity […]

No. 1 Punahou All-State football

By Jerry Campany on August 7, 2014

Pupule Paul Honda is crazier than you think. The Prince of Preps actually rates as many high school players as he can and plugs them into his NCAA football game, replaying games that he has already seen. He already has Vavae Malepaei at 99 and Wayne Taulapapa at 98, feel free to add you rankings in the comments to this post. He can’t wait to play the games that were canceled this weekend. He only does teams year-by-year, but if […]
