Preparation leads to big night by Cockett, Kapule

By Paul Honda on September 1, 2016

Between Nick Kapule and Stephen Barber, Punahou has more than enough pristine passing talent in the shotgun. The two slingers also have a penchant for spreading the pigskin from sideline to sideline, taking what any defense gives. Kamehameha happened to give Punahou’s Judd Cockett more opportunities than he’s used to getting. Cockett, a 5-foot-11, 163-pound senior, slithered his way through the creases of Kamehameha’s active defense for five receptions and 103 yards, including touchdown grabs of 4, 8 and 44 […]

The NFHS recently recognized the Punahou-Kamehameha rivalry as the longest in the nation in terms of games played. The 183 meetings between the two […]

By Paul Honda on August 24, 2016

With the Interscholastic League of Honolulu having much to gain with the recent format change to the state football tournaments, it’s no surprise that Punahou coach Kale Ane is pleased. The longtime coach and assistant athletic director found out about the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s decision after Punahou’s late-afternoon practice on Monday. “Great news for all of us. Very appreciative to those who got this done,” Ane texted. “Looking forward to an exciting year and an exciting finish.” Punahou […]

Wednesday recruiting update

By Billy Hull on August 17, 2016

Hawaii High School Football Recruiting Tracker A couple of recruiting tidbits. Waianae’s Kanai Mauga, a junior defensive end listed at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, told me Sunday that he has received a scholarship offer from Oregon State. Mauga was a beast against Kapolei last Saturday. He completely blew up the right tackle blocking him on the Hurricanes’ first two passing plays and was then double-teamed for most of the game. He had a tipped pass at the line and also got […]
