Learning time for young Nanakuli, Watson

By Brian McInnis on August 5, 2017

It wasn’t really the kind of debut that Kili Watson wanted, but Friday night’s 51-14 home loss to Waipahu could hold value for Nanakuli’s new head football coach nonetheless. The young Watson was measured afterward, and had good reason; it wasn’t a terrible loss under the circumstances. The Golden Hawks had precious little experience, while the Marauders returned a load of it. Both teams were at less than full strength because of several players landing on early season academic probation, […]

Nanakuli’s Watson continues what brother started

By Nick Abramo on April 7, 2017

Kili Watson is not that far removed from high school and now he is a high school football head coach. Last month, Nanakuli announced a transfer of power, so to speak, from Keala Watson to his brother Kili to lead the Golden Hawks. Unlike some other head coaching changes, this was not a big shakeup. As a matter of fact, Keala, a former standout for the University of Hawaii, still shows up to help whenever he can for the players’ […]

Watson steps down as Nanakuli football coach

By Hawaii Prep World on March 8, 2017

Nanakuli announced Wednesday night that head football coach Keala Watson is stepping down for personal family issues. Offensive coordinator Kieran Watson will take over as head coach. Keala Watson went 21-17 in four seasons with the Golden Hawks. After going 4-5 in his first season, Watson led the Golden Hawks to the OIA Division II championship in 2014 with a 37-36 overtime win over Pearl City in the final. It was the first OIA football title for Nanakuli since 1983. […]

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2016

NERDPOD: Quarterbacks v3.0 The Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best quarterbacks in the state. This is more of a run-through than a breakdown of QB statistics for the first time since almost two months. Numbers don’t tell the whole story, of course. That’s why this is Nerdpod, not fanpod. Some amazing, eye-popping numbers this season. QBs listed below in random order for the most part. QUARTERBACKS Tua Tagovailoa, Saint Louis Measurables: 6-1, 210, […]

Nerdpod: Receivers v4.0

By Paul Honda on October 20, 2016

NERDPOD: Receivers v4.0 Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best pass catchers in the state. The regular season has drawn its curtain across the islands, but I’ll be adding more pass catchers to this list until the playoffs and state tourney are done, and maybe past that, too. This week, five additions. Numbers are nice, but seeing how they reflect a player’s season is usually intriguing. Even players who don’t have statistics that scratch the ceiling […]

GAME NIGHT 9/30: Nanakuli/Kapolei

By Hawaii Prep World on September 30, 2016

The regular season begins to wind down Friday night with the OIA Division I playoffs set to begin next week. No. 4 Kapolei (6-1, 5-1) has already clinched the OIA Red title, a berth in the state tournament, and a bye in the first-round of the OIA playoffs heading into its regular-season finale tonight hosting Nanakuli (0-7, 0-6). The Golden Hawks have not won a game, but have lost four of their seven games by 14 points or less and […]
