Kapolei’s defense draws the line

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 20, 2014

Kapolei defensive coordinator Brad Hewahewa made his line a promise. “I told them if I ever get interviewed the first guys I’m going to (mention) is the D-line,” Hewahewa said. Hewahewa got that chance after the Hurricanes’ 20-0 homecoming night shutout of Kailua on Friday. The Hurricanes held Kailua to 127 yards in total offense, 43 coming on the Surfriders’ final possession, and Hewahewa was quick to credit the defensive front. “I always tell them it starts with the D-line,” […]

VIDEO: #6 Campbell at Kapolei

Kapolei led 13-0 with a steady ground attack and relentless defense. But the visitors from Campbell rallied in the second half and took the lead with 57 seconds to play. Instant classic.

Another heartbreaking loss for Kapolei

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2014

What can anyone say to a team like this? It’s five games into the OIA Blue Division season and the talented, big and fast Kapolei Hurricanes are 1-4. It’s not a total shock, not with a first-year starter at quarterback, but Hurricane fans have gotten plenty of visuals. The eye test says the final results should be better. Kapolei is pretty good in so many areas, and still, defeat awaits the ‘Canes at the finish line. Saturday night was another […]

LIVE BLOG: #6 Campbell 14, Kapolei 13

By Paul Honda on September 12, 2014

Traffic was brutal from Honolulu to the Leeward side, but it’s always beautiful here. Hot, no breeze, but lots of blue sky. Those of us who left town at 3 p.m. or so didn’t get here until about 4:45. That’s about as long as it takes to drive from Kona to Hilo, give or take 15 minutes. The JV game is not starting at 5 p.m., which we were told was going to be the case starting with this weekend. […]

VIDEO: Kapolei at Moanalua

By Paul Honda on September 8, 2014

A back-and-forth battle for three quarters on a rainy night at Moanalua. Weather conditions favored the run-first Hurricanes and were a hindrance for the normally prolific passing attack of Na Menehune. Kapolei scores the final two touchdowns, both by Trensten Spragling, in a 25-14 win.

Elements favor Hurricanes in their 1st win

By Paul Honda on September 6, 2014

It was almost eerie the way the Moanalua Valley wind and rain fell just as the varsity game’s warmups began. I mean, it was boiling hot and sunny all through the JV game. And the rain and wind hardly let up. It wasn’t a downpour, just a steady sprinkle, sometimes wet enough to create puddles. And on Moanalua’s dirt-baked field — mud lakes are up and down from one end to the other between the hashmarks — that absolutely worked […]

LIVE BLOG: Kapolei at Moanalua

By Paul Honda on September 5, 2014

Beautiful weather for a matchup that has playoff implications. Kapolei is 0-3 in OIA Blue play and Moanalua is 1-2. Five of the seven division members will qualify for the playoffs, so a win here helps Moanalua’s cause tremendously. For Kapolei, this is almost a must-win situation. After a treacherous gauntlet of elite competition, this marks the first time this season the Hurricanes are not playing a Top 10 team — though Moanalua is awfully close. Na Menehune stunned then-ranked […]

VIDEO: #2 Mililani at #10 Kapolei

By Paul Honda on September 2, 2014

Extended version Win No. 4 didn’t come easy for the Mililani Trojans. Turnovers derailed two early drives, but McKenzie Milton threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns while Vavae Malepeai rushed for 156 yards and two TDs in a 41-14 road win.
