Hernandez in another Civil War

By Jerry Campany on September 4, 2015

Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez has built quite a coaching tree over the years. But one danger of having so many assistants running teams in the same league is having the fruit from the many branches fall and bop you on the head. Hernandez will have his rematch with former offensive coordinator Jason Cauley on Saturday, a week before he hooks up with Amosa Amosa of Campbell. Hernandez still has bragging rights over Cauley, his Hurricanes beat Na Menehune 30-13 last […]

Kapolei’s Tagovailoa impressive in first start

By Nick Abramo on September 1, 2015

Apparently, one talented quarterback named Tagovailoa is not enough for the state of Hawaii. We all know about junior Tua Tagovailoa and his passing and rushing skills that he’s been putting on display for the No. 2 Saint Louis Crusaders since last season. Lesser known is his brother, Taulia Tagovailoa, who is only a freshman. He passed for a school-record 394 yards along with three touchdowns in the Hurricanes’ 67-21 loss to Mililani on Saturday night. Observations 101: Quick release, […]

Mililani/Kapolei destroys record books

By Billy Hull on August 30, 2015

A day later and it’s still hard to process the show that both Mililani and Kapolei put on Saturday night at John Kauinana Stadium. Mililani QB McKenzie Milton was so good that he even had Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez calling him the best quarterback he’s ever seen. Offensive records dropped like crazy so let’s take a closer look at just exactly what transpired. >> Milton threw for 515 yards to become the fourth quarterback on Oahu to top 500 yards […]

LIVE BLOG: Kailua 20, Kapolei 6, F

By Paul Honda on August 24, 2015

FIRST QUARTER Kailua takes the lead on Noah Auld’s 8-yard TD pass on fourth down to Martin Tigilau. KAIL 7, KPO 0, 1:04. Kailua had stalled on its previous possession with an incomplete pass by Auld on fourth and 4 at the Kapolei 13. The wet field — it rained during pre-game warmup for about 15 minutes — played a factor. Kapolei QB Ezra Savea lost control of a low snap but recovered for a 1-yard loss. On the next […]

LIVE BLOG: Kapolei 0, Kailua 0, rescheduled

By Billy Hull on August 22, 2015

The second of two Saturday games involving two ranked teams kicks off around 6:30 p.m. as No. 8 Kapolei (1-1, 0-1 OIA BLUE) travels to Kailua to face the 10th-ranked Surfriders (2-0, 1-0 OIA BLUE). Kailua has been the surprise of the 2015 season so far beating both Castle and Leilehua. Now the Surfriders have to try and end a five-game losing streak to Kapolei. In fact, Kailua’s only win ever against the Hurricanes came back in 2004. 9/19/2014: Kapolei […]

Hernandez wants greatness from his ‘D’

By Paul Honda on August 18, 2015

They wanted more. The Kapolei Hurricanes played some stellar defense in the face of Kahuku’s smashmouth attack, but never got anything going offensively until the second half. The good news is that much of the ‘Canes’ difficulties — bad snaps, dropped snaps, dropped passes — are correctible. Not that it softens the sting of defeat, 27-7 at the hands of the then-fourth ranked Red Raiders on Friday night. “Never happy with a loss. I’m never happy with a moral victory.,” […]
