Tagovailoa, Noah-Williams break records

By Jerry Campany on October 9, 2015

Earlier this season, Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said his team had finally joined the modern era after years of relying on defense and a bruising running game. The Hurricanes still have that defense, not giving up more than seven points in a game since Sept. 5, but it is the passing attack that has evolved the most. It starts with quarterback Taulia Tagovialoa, of course, but the young freshman certainly has talent around him. Tagovailoa is the only Kapolei quarterback […]

LIVE BLOG: Kapolei 41, Castle 0, F

By Paul Honda on October 9, 2015

FIRST QUARTER Kapolei receives the opening kickoff, drives to the Castle 29 and stalls out. Castle then goes three and out. A lot of passing, not a lot of connections yet. Eight plays, 85 yards for Kapolei on its second series. After missing the targets earlier, Taulia Tagovailoa is on point with a 20-yard pass to Jaymin Sarono. Ty-Noah Williams is wide open deep for a 57-yard TD pass from Tagovailoa. PAT pass is easy enough from the holder to […]

Kapolei rides defense into playoffs

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 3, 2015

Kapolei enters the OIA Division I playoffs with a four-game winning streak powered in no small part by the Hurricanes defense. The Hurricanes (5-3, 4-3 OIA Blue) held their final three opponents of the regular season to a touchdown or less while allowing a total of 19 points in wins over Campbell, Farrington and Aiea. Kapolei held Aiea to two field goals and 135 yards in total offense in a 16-6 win on homecoming night on Friday. The defensive performance […]

Kapolei to add brand-new football locker room

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2015

The deadline had passed, the game story was sent in and it was time to head out of the Kapolei High School field after the Hurricanes rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Campbell 16-7 on Friday night. Ahhh, but there was head coach Darren Hernandez about to sit down and have some postgame grinds with his assistants. “Got a minute?” he was asked. Well, of course, he needed to unwind from a stressful football game anyway and he wasn’t […]

Kapolei recovers in vigorous defensive slugfest

By Nick Abramo on September 12, 2015

Close-to-the-vest, defensively played football is a rarity these days. So folks who headed west to see Campbell at Kapolei on Friday were treated to an old-school escapade in which the Hurricanes fought back for a 16-7 win to reach the .500 mark. Offenses be damned. This one was like a 1-0 baseball game won in the bottom of the ninth. Only 3 points were electronically zapped on to the scoreboard (and scoreboards are known for their 76-53 and 90-0 results […]

VIDEO: Moanalua at No. 10 Kapolei

By Paul Honda on September 7, 2015

Another record-setting performance by Kapolei quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who passes for 448 yards to break the school mark he established just one week earlier. Highlights, OIA Blue (Division) football, Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015. Score: Hurricanes 33, Na Menehune 21.

Nowhere to run, so ‘Canes get airborne

By Paul Honda on September 6, 2015

It’s not the recent release of Madden 16 that’ll have these numbers for any QB in a single game: 42 completions, 67 pass attempts, 448 yards with four TDs, three INTs. It was a good night’s work for Kapolei’s Taulia Tagovailoa as the Hurricanes got past Moanalua 33-21 on Saturday. Even with at 6.7 yards per attempt, it wasn’t sheer luck that the freshman was consistent with his connections to eight different receivers. Not many fans would’ve blamed the Hurricanes […]

PRE-GAME 6:40 p.m. Yuen is warming up with Cauley separately on the field. He’s in full gear (see photo below), not sure if he’s actually playing tonight. Cauley termed Yuen’s injury at the Farrington game as a “stinger.” Depending on the MRI and his doctor’s decision, it could be very little to no damage, or it could be something risky. Hoping to find out soon. 6:59 p.m. Word is Yuen practiced this week and was cleared by his doctor to […]
