Q&A: Kaimuki coach David Tautofi on the state of Bulldogs football

Here, in view of Diamond Crater, is some breathing room for the Kaimuki Bulldogs. 
 Playing with as few as 23 players in the 2018 season, Kaimuki managed to qualify for the state football tournament. The Bulldogs won at Kamehameha-Hawaii, then lost in a close battle against Kapaa at Vidinha Stadium in Lihue. Their All-State two-way lineman, Sama Paama, suffered a knee injury on Kaimuki’s final offensive play.

Kaimuki’s Sama Paama to enroll early after signing with UW

Like most everything in the life of young Sama Paama, there was no doubt. The Kaimuki senior signed his letter of intent this morning to accept a football scholarship from Washington. The 6-foot-4, 335-pound lineman is being recruited by the Huskies on defense. Paama played his career as a two-way trench man, and part-time kicker as Kaimuki reached the Division II state semifinals. It’s time to start considering whether David Tautofi is the best coach the Kaimuki Bulldogs have ever had. After his fourth season, Tautofi is the only coach to put four winning seasons together and has compiled a 27-16 record to nuzzle up against Lowell Cambra (36-37-1) as the second-winningest coach in Kaimuki history. Points and big plays were tough to come by when Kaimuki visited KIF champion Kapaa on Saturday. In the end, Stetson Telles-Kelekoma came up with an interception with 6.7 seconds left to preserve Kapaa’s 20-12 victory at Vidinha Stadium.

No structural damage to Paama’s knee

An X-ray revealed no structural damage to the injured knee of Kaimuki lineman Sama Paama, Bulldogs coach David Tautofi said on Sunday morning. “He’s doing OK. Thank God the X-ray was good,” Tautofi said of Paama, who was able to board the Bulldogs’ 11 p.m. flight back to Oahu from Lihue on Saturday.
