Enthused at Kalaepohaku

By Jerry Campany on August 3, 2010

Darnell Arceneaux has quite the brain for this game of football. The former Utah and Hawaiian Islanders quarterback is more than an offensive thinker, though. Balance has always been one of his priorities, and if that means meshing the X’s and O’s with renewed enthusiasm, so be it. Across the recently redone turf at Saint Louis’ field, the former Mililani coach barks, encourages and corrects through an afternoon practice on Monday — the team’s first in full pads. It’s the […]

Tiger Town: New coach, system

By Jerry Campany on August 3, 2010

With new coach Joseph Cho, the McKinley Tigers have a new approach this season. They have 42 on the roster and former head coach Bobby Grey remains as an assistant. Another former head coach, William Moeava, is the running backs coach. Cho, a former all-league linebacker at McKinley, coached in Oregon for 38 seasons before returning last month. The question now is whether there’s enough time for the Tigers to learn the nuances of Cho’s offense, which has some fly […]

More HBA-Newport Harbor

By Jerry Campany on April 10, 2010

More on last night’s matchup between Hawaii Baptist and Newport Harbor (Calif.) at the Clash of the Titans boys volleyball tournament at Hemmeter Fieldhouse. Newport Harbor was off-key in the opening set, then played lights-out the rest of the way for a 22-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-16 win. “We got back into a little bit of rhythm,” Sailors coach Dan Glenn said. “We didn’t get into a rhythm (Thursday) night. Punahou kicked our butts.” Newport Harbor, which is 7-5 overall and […]

Pre-game: Molokai-Kaimuki, girls hoops

By Jerry Campany on February 19, 2010

After a season of Division II competition in the Maui Interscholastic League, it was imperative for the Molokai Farmers to find ways to retain their sharpness. How does a team stay on edge without a nemesis for the entire regular season? Molokai, a team with Division I talent — junior center Kalei Adolpho has already committed to play for the University of Hawaii — needed to develop, even after winning the D-II state title last year. Guard Danna-Lynn Hooper is […]

Pre-game: Konawaena-Lahainaluna, girls hoops

By Jerry Campany on February 19, 2010

He doesn’t have to acknowledge anything or anyone, and neither does his team. Yet, Todd Rickard does so. When he coached Lahainaluna girls basketball years ago, along with the Menehune hoops program in the community, it was a simple process that involved day-to-day workouts. It was all about commitment, the kind that lacked in so many communities then, and even now. After all, there are plenty of bright minds who have a heart for the game of basketball. But committing […]

Post-game: Konawaena-‘Iolani, girls hoops

By Jerry Campany on February 19, 2010

By Paul Honda Some post-game notes from the semifinal game between Konawaena and ‘Iolani in the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships at Blaisdell Arena last night. The defending champion Wildcats won 54-22 in what was the second-widest of margin of victory in a semifinal, according to the “Wizard,” longtime statistician and former sportswriter Frank Mauz. The Wizard, this morning: “The largest semi-final margin was 33 points (Kamehameha 73, Radford 40 in 1992) and close behind was 32 points (Konawaena […]

Post-game: Konawaena-Kapolei, girls hoops

By Jerry Campany on February 18, 2010

By Paul Honda It was a demonstration of basketball knowledge. It was also a live example of carnage, predator feasting on prey. In this case, there was no blood or gnashing of teeth. It was just Konawaena’s girls basketball team completely ravaging a Kapolei squad that had more turnovers (31) than field goals. It was a 59-31 win for Konawaena in a game that easily could’ve been a bigger blowout, but the Wildcats wisely saved their legs for the semifinal […]
