By Paul Honda on March 18, 2016

Day 2 of the Hawaii Boys Volleyball Invitational Tournament is near a close and there has been no shortage of excitement. (The championship round will be played on Saturday with a 4 p.m. Final.) The madness of this March tourney may be just starting. No. 2 Moanalua stunned No. 1 Punahou tonight 19-25, 25-21, 15-12 in pool play. We caught up with Moanalua’s All-State outside hitter, Austin Matautia, for his thoughts on what may be the program’s first-ever win over […]

Stuff like this could happen in Hawaii, too

By Nick Abramo on March 10, 2016

Thanks to a story by the Arizona Republic’s Richard Obert, a follow-up story by MaxPreps’ Mitch Stephens and a video captured by the Centennial High School baseball team, we get to see an inspiring moment in the life of Caleb Norling. Norling, a senior who has cerebral palsy and was the team’s batboy for three seasons, scored a run in a recent game. It’s a huge act of sportsmanship and making a lifetime dream become a reality for a student […]

It’s a big leap from high school to college

By Jerry Campany on March 3, 2016

Getting your name listed in the Star-Advertiser’s weekly Hawaii Grown Report is no easy task. The NCAA recently released a chart giving the percentage chance of playing in college, and the numbers show an uphill road. The two easiest sports to transition from high school and college are not sanctioned by the HHSAA, ice hockey and lacrosse. According to the numbers, swimming is the easiest path to college with seven percent of male prep swimmers heading on to compete in […]

The keiki divisions are in their title games as of 1:30 p.m. I’ll post team photos after they’re done. The Prep Division is in full throttle. Shawna Kuehu’s Team White is battling Kii Spencer-Vasconcellos’ Team Black. Here are some shots.

Big Dance, day 4: Daytime edition

By Paul Honda on February 12, 2016

A part of me will always be trapped/locked/embracing those years when the entire girls basketball tournament was held from morning to night here at Stan Sheriff Center. Of course, back then the girls hoops season was played in the spring (I liked that) and there was no Division II basketball (I think) for many of those years. Anyway, it was a rare chance to see EVERY team and EVERY player in the tourney. Spoiled, we were, yes. Today, the D-II […]

Update: Kaiser 34, Leilehua 27, F

By Paul Honda on February 10, 2016

Game time is just a minute away according to the scoreboard here at Moanalua High School. What to expect between OIA champ Leilehua and Kaiser? The Lady Cougars of Kaiser have nothing to lose but may be fatigued after a tough 44-41 win over KS-Maui yesterday. Key is Rose Shimaoka. After playing all 32 minutes does she have more in the gas tank? Will Leilehua play loose and strong or tight and hesitant? Teams with opening-day byes have shown a […]

Update: Kaiser 44, KS-Maui 41, F

By Paul Honda on February 9, 2016

We are half an hour from tip-off at the Moanalua bracket of the OC-16/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championships. Kaiser has had a unique, sometimes painful season because of the early-season suspension of Coach Simon Bitanga, who was investigated and then cleared by the DOE. It’s not the first time a coach has been forced to sit for a large chunk of the season only to be cleared eventually. To his credit, Coach Bitanga doesn’t seem bitter or upset […]

UPDATE: Kamehameha 73, St Louis 63, F

By Paul Honda on January 15, 2016

I’ll update at the end of quarters. Here we go! Q1 A lot of up and down the court for both teams and the home team, Saint Louis leads 15-12 behind six points by Jaymason Nunuha. Q2 Zarriello hits two 3-pointers as the Warriors go on a 15-5 run to start the quarter. Their 27-20 lead doesn’t last. Saint Louis rallies and takes a 31-28 lead into the half. Nunuha has 11 points at the break. Tristan Nichols with 6/6. […]
