Reading between the lines of OIA transfer rule

By Nick Abramo on May 16, 2018

ANALYSIS The rewording of the OIA transfer rule may seem like small potatoes, but it has large implications. Due to an out-of-court settlement in the case of Miller v. Kishimoto recently, the scuttlebutt around OIA athletic directors is that the league is back to the “wild, wild West” of a few years ago. OIA athletic directors will not talk about it on the record, referring any inquiries to OIA executive director Ray Fujino. Fujino did not return a call asking […]

Damien on upward trend with first major state title

By Nick Abramo on May 16, 2018

The Damien baseball team that kept on winning against the odds to capture the Division II title in the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships on Friday did something no other team in school history had done. It was Damien’s first state crown in a so-called major team sport. The school’s four previous state championships were won in what are considered minor sports – boys bowling in 1988 and 1993 and in boys cross country in 1969 and 1970. In […]

Longest-running state streaks

By Brian McInnis on May 15, 2018

Now that the 2017-18 high school athletic calendar has wrapped up, it’s time to take an updated stock of who’s going streaking … when it comes to team championships. Punahou, not surprisingly, owns seven of the 10 longest streaks spanning all sports and divisions (team titles only). Its 16 straight in girls tennis remains the gold standard in the time since its 26 consecutive boys tennis titles ended at the hands of ‘Iolani in 2017. The longest streaks to come […]

Punahou, Moanalua: Nos. 1, 2 for most state titles

By Nick Abramo on May 13, 2018

Not surprisingly, Punahou won the most team state championships out of the 46 koa trophies awarded during the 2017-18 sports season. Moanalua came in second among the state’s high schools with four. After that Baldwin, ‘Iolani and St. Francis tied with three each. By league, the ILH took home 25 state titles, followed by the OIA with nine, the BIIF with six, the MIL with six, and the KIF with none. The top schools in boys sports are: Punahou with […]

By Nick Abramo on May 7, 2018

The Honolulu Sharks, with players from various schools, defeated Konawaena High 3-2 in the Founders Cup high school club lacrosse championship Sunday at Kapiolani Park. It’s the fourth title in a row for coach Thomas Syverson and his Sharks squad. In tournament pool play, the Sharks tied Punahou 2-2 and Konawaena 2-2. Then, they beat Saint Louis 4-1 to lock up a berth against the Wildcats in the title game. Beau Hitomi, Ethan Buck and Zack Tiefel scored the Honolulu […]

High school club lacrosse soldiers on

By Nick Abramo on April 12, 2018

Club lacrosse still has life in Hawaii high schools. There are five teams in the state, including three on Oahu — Saint Louis, Punahou and the Sharks (a team of students from many schools). The other two teams are on the Big Island — Konawaena and Hawaii Prep. This is the first year the sport is being offered at Saint Louis. The coach is John Keogh, who was hired there as a teacher recently. Keogh used to be part of […]

Students show appreciation for officials

By Billy Hull on April 10, 2018

It has become a thankless job over the years and some of Hawaii’s finest student-athletes are trying to change that. The ILH Student Advisory Committee — a group of 36 student-athletes representing all 19 ILH schools who meet multiple times a year to discuss issues statewide and nationally, volunteer for community service projects and learn sportsmanship and leadership skills to take back to their athletic teams within the ILH — has put together Officials Appreciation Week that started Monday and ends on […]

Alameda’s heroics underscore Hilo’s blue-collar grit

By Paul Honda on December 30, 2017

Most of the Hilo Vikings weren’t born yet the last time the program won a state championship in boys basketball. It was 2000, when Jason Mandaquit and his blonde hairdo ran the point for the team that carried 13 sticks bound together from one gym to the next. With Wes Martinez fortifying the team, leaving his beloved rooster behind in Ka‘u to play with childhood pal Mandaquit, the Vikings were a team of destiny. It was the final state title […]
