Molokai volleyball touring Oahu

By Paul Honda on October 4, 2010

Just got the word that Molokai girls volleyball team is in town to get some much-needed competition. The Farmers, who have an extremely limited schedule in the Maui Interscholastic League due to travel costs and divisional (classification) lines, will play No. 2-ranked Punahou today at 4 p.m. in an exhibition match. Molokai, which is ranked No. 3 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10, will visit No. 1 Kamehameha tomorrow at 4 p.m.

Hawaii Baptist stays on top

By Paul Honda on November 4, 2009

Two days after Hawaii Baptist won a state championship — the Eagles’ third Division II crown in a row — it was back to work. Another spectacular season, 21-2 including an upset at Kamehameha — the eventual D-I state champ — peaked with a tough four-set victory over Word of Life on Saturday. But there was no break, no layoff, no rest for the happily weary. “They’re busy with club volleyball,” coach Myles Shioji said. That’s right, the grind of […]

Blake brings another title home

By Paul Honda on November 3, 2009

There’s a lot going on in the mind of Chris Blake. He may not verbalize everything, but he puts pen to paper often. So much so, that his trusty black composition book may well be his treasure chest. During Kamehameha volleyball matches, it serves as a shield while the coach instructs his players, particularly for pre-serve directions. The Kamehameha physics teacher also stores ideas and inspiration on those pages, the kind that trigger the start of offseason training, then weave […]

Kamehameha keeps the crown

By Paul Honda on November 1, 2009

Down 14-8 in Game 4 — and down 2-1 in the match, Kamehameha rallied for an amazing 22-25, 25-18, 26-28, 25-23, 15-6 win over top-seeded Punahou last night in the Division I final of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships at the Stan Sheriff Center. After finishing second to Punahou in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, Kamehameha (20-3) saw its dynasty grow with a fifth straight state title. Kamehameha hit .245 to Punahou’s .152 (33 hitting errors). Kamehameha […]

VB: In the middle of it all

By Jerry Campany on October 29, 2009

In Punahou’s first action in states this year, the middles carried the early load as the Buffanblu rolled easily over Farrington 25-14, 25-15, 25-14 yesterday at McKinley High School. Russo and Thompson combined for 17 of the team’s 31 kills in the first two games. Thompson, a 6-foot-2 senior, finished with a match-high 12 kills on 17 swings with only two hitting errors (.588). Russo, a 6-0 junior, contributed six kills on seven swings with no hitting errors (.857). The […]

VB: Red scare

By Paul Honda on October 23, 2009

This wasn’t the first time a Kahuku volleyball team started slowly. It was certainly the first time in recent memory, however, a team made such a big comeback in the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs. The Red Raiders rallied from a 24-18 deficit to stun Moanalua, and went on to a 27-25, 25-20, 26-28, 25-18 win on Thursday to win their second league title in a row. “Moanalua is a tough team, but we had to play our game. The girls […]

VB: Punahou has a change of heart

By Paul Honda on October 22, 2009

On Tuesday, the state’s No. 1 girls volleyball team, Punahou, was set to participate in this weekend’s Bump, Set and Spike for the Cure exhibition tournament at La Pietra. By Wednesday, the Buffanblu had a change of heart. Citing concern about injury risk before next week’s state championships, Punahou pulled out of the event. The tourney will still have No. 2 Kamehameha, No. 4 Hawaii Baptist and Word of Life, plus host La Pietra. Kamehameha has already secured a berth […]

VB: Hawaii Baptist rolls to title

By Paul Honda on October 20, 2009

There’s no substitute for experience, which Hawaii Baptist has in droves. The Eagles withstood a furious Word of Life attack in the first two sets and cruised through the third for a 25-23, 25-22, 25-12 sweep last night to capture the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II tournament. A near-capacity crowd at Dan Liu Gym endured sweltering humidity to see HBA, the regular-season winner, avoid a winner-take-all match against the Firebrands. HBA (18-2), ranked No. 4 in the Star-Bulletin Girls […]
