Finesse and firepower: Timing is everything for state-tourney bound Punahou

By Paul Honda on October 28, 2021

It’s not the ultimate goal for Punahou, but a five-set win over ‘Iolani on Tuesday certainly opened the door. The Buffanblu fought off the Raiders 25-11, 19-25, 25-9, 21-25, 15-9 to earn a state-tournament berth. With the rest of the state’s leagues still in the early stage of their respective seasons, Punahou is the first team to qualify. They did it through the typical gauntlet that is ILH volleyball, and more. In the end, ‘Iolani and every other opponent could […]

By Paul Honda on October 25, 2021

The musical chairs of ILH girls volleyball hasn’t come close to ending. Kamehameha is the latest of the big three to rise to No. 1. The Warriors, who outlasted then-No. 1 Punahou in five sets last Tuesday, are the new team atop the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10. Kamehameha (5-3) collected six out of 10 first-place votes from the panel of coaches and media. The return of national team outside hitter Devin Kahahawai recently is a jolt to the league, […]

Even with limited capacity, Kahuku fans travel in full force

By Paul Honda on October 22, 2021

Tuli Tevaga appreciates every win. The former Kahuku standout is also grateful for a loss, especially the one against Moanalua to open the OIA East regular season. Since then, the Lady Raiders have won two in a row, including a 25-15, 25-17, 25-21 sweep of Roosevelt on Thursday night. At some point, No. 7-ranked Kahuku and No. 4 Moanalua will probably meet again. “It was amazing. It was a really good match. I’m glad we had them at the beginning,” […]

Kamehameha’s big win over Punahou a little sweeter for Sierra Scanlan

By Paul Honda on October 20, 2021

When the pandemic extended beyond 2020, Sierra Scanlan‘s heart broke a little. Then a junior, the Kamehameha setter opted out of athletics in the spring while the ILH moved the girls volleyball season from fall of ’19 to the spring of ’20. Kamehameha won the ILH title without Scanlan. But fast-forward to this fall, and the boarder from Puna on the Big Island is a key part of Kamehameha’s title chase. Sitting in the bleachers at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium on Tuesday […]

Fireball power: Zoe Slaughter is a sparkplug for No. 4 Moanalua

By Paul Honda on October 19, 2021

In another year, she may have just been a little too saucy. Too spicy. Maybe too strong. This fall, Zoe Slaughter is among her peers and people, a magnetic, electric jolt on a squad of intense, jovial and driven volleyball lifers. Moanalua is ranked fourth in the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10, 2-0 entering the second week of OIA regular-season play. Slaughter, a libero, is glue gal. Coach Alan Cabanting calls her “spunky” and the positive charge who keeps everyone’s […]

Under first-year Buffanblu coach Tita Ahuna, Punahou has been atop the rankings for three weeks in a row. Baldwin entered the Top 10 for the first time this season. The Bears, under new coach Al Paschoal, have swept Lahainaluna, Kamehameha-Maui and King Kekaulike en route to a 3-0 start. Paschoal previously coached at King Kekaulike and is a graduate of Baldwin. No. 4 Moanalua fueled up for a title run in OIA

By Paul Honda on October 15, 2021

Senior libero Zoe Slaughter calls her team, in a word, “motivated.” Senior Kelia Giusta describes this fall’s Moanalua girls volleyball team this way: “energetic.” The co-captains nod in agreement when they hear what coach Alan Cabanting‘s description. Cabanting calls them his “fireball” squad. “That’s pretty good,” Slaughter said. This year’s team has plenty of natural intensity. A team that embraces the fire. Fourth-ranked Moanalua is 2-0 in the return of OIA girls volleyball, posting wins over No. 5 Kahuku — […]
