Executive decision: HHSAA voting results

Here are the recommendations from the athletic directors’ conference on Kauai. The conference began on Thursday, ended Saturday and resulted in the following approved proposals. The proposals went up for HHSAA executive board voting on Tuesday morning at the OIA office, located at Radford High School. LIHUE — This is the Kauai Marriott Resort, loaded with lush foliage. Bromeliads everywhere. Prominently rising to the sky are 30-foot columns fitting for an emperor or two. A family of nene goose rest comfortably in on the lawn fronting a helicopter rental shop, not far from man-made streams filled with koi. The class of 2012 was inducted into the HHSAA Hall of Honor tonight, hosted by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association. The banquet was at the Sheraton Waikiki, a full house with 12 magnificent student-athletes. More photos below. Some were video captures. Fun night for 12 outstanding individuals!

It was a special time for a special class, which is why they made a morning of it at Kapolei. The Hurricanes gathered, 17 strong, for a ceremony to honor the college-bound student athletes. This isn’t quite high school-related, but when I worked in Kona right out of college back in the 1990s, Pat Summitt left a lasting impression on me. She announced her retirement today, news that was widely anticipated, but still stunning, at least to me. She seemed to be ageless. Steady as an oak tree and tough as one, too.
