The Konawaena Wildcats aren’t climbing the charts, but they haven’t been demoted, either. The latest MaxPreps Xcellent 25 Girls Basketball Rankings released on Thursday has Hawaii’s top squad at No. 21. Konawaena, coached by five-time state championship coach Bobbie Awa, was at No. 21 last week. The Wildcats are 21-1 overall. Maryknoll’s free-throw shooting was horrendous Thursday, but a late comeback victory can cure many ills. The Spartans went 10-for-25 from the line, a paltry 40 percent, but amid the feel-good postgame celebration, free-throw shooting was not on top of coach Chico Furtado’s mind after the thrilling 47-46 over ILH rival Punahou at Ching Gymnasium. Liz Kam has seen a lot in her years as a basketball player at Punahou, and as an assistant coach. When she was hired to become varsity girls coach at Mid-Pacific, Kam was prepared for every possibility that might come along for a growing program.
